When ever I try to run FEAR 2 or Half-Life in Steam the "Preparing to launch" window comes up and then disappears. I assume every game I have will do this same thing, but it takes way to long to install anything in Steam. Both games produce the following output in the terminal: Code: err:ole:CoGetClassObject class {9a5ea990-3034-4d6f-9128-01f3c61022bc} not registered err:ole:CoGetClassObject no class object {9a5ea990-3034-4d6f-9128-01f3c61022bc} could be created for context 0x1 err:seh:raise_exception Unhandled exception code c0000005 flags 0 addr 0x7edf8574 err:ole:RevokeDragDrop invalid hwnd (nil) err:ole:RevokeDragDrop invalid hwnd 0x30114 I am using Wine v1.1.43, I have the most up to date Nvidia drivers, and have tried reinstalling them twice. I have also tried reinstalling Wine, Steam, FEAR 2 and Half-Life, but I still get the exact same errors. Thank you in advance for any help. Have you tried to update your Wine install to the latest (1.23 rc )
The latest version is not 1.2-rc3, rc4 is out since 4 days ! ;)
Not sure what steam games you have tried but see if peggle extreme works. It is a free steam download. The link is in the steam forum as a sticky titled free steam games. It is also a fairly small download. I have tried reinstalling everything. I removed every trace of Wine from the computer and reinstalled it. I have all ready reinstalled Steam three times, and both games twice. I am currently trying to download some more games to test, but it is fairly slow unfortunately.
Peggle Extreme gives the exact same errors as Half-Life and FEAR 2. I am downloading Portal right now, all though I am sure it will do the same thing.
Turn off the in-game community features (Steam -> Settings -> In Game). Had the same problem as you and this worked like a charm

ah sorry for double post :P Glad to hear you solved the problem
It's not a bug with wine from what I have found. It is an issue with the game since the majority of people that have this problem are using Windows. Still haven't had any luck finding a solution that works though. :?
