I did now everything mentioned in this thread but I have big problem. When I start Torchlight, freshly installed just with the settings.txt, it freezes after some time the whole system (fedora 11, GNOME). I have to restart my laptop, there is nothing else I can do. So what do you recommend to try?
Berillions wrote:> Hello Ceephour, where is this file : settings.txt ? > @vitamin, i used wine 1.1.32 [Wink]The file is created upon first run of the game. However, when we launch the game it crashes, and the file is never created. The cycle repeats until the file is present. It is in this archive : http://www.runicgames.com/uploads/safemode.zip

So what do you recommend to try?Is it a handful of minutes, or many hours? Users on the Runic Games forum are complaining about diminished performance over time, so much so that they are restarting the game after 20 minutes http://forums.runicgames.com/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=1634&p=23322 Last night I played for a good 3 hours and only noticed a split-second hiccup when large groups of enemies popped on screen (>15 ?) at once. I do have some frame tearing, but framerate (whatever it is) appeared to maintain steady otherwise (even when fighting large groups of enemies with tons of effects). There seems to be some discussion about this over at their official forums. http://forums.runicgames.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1272 http://forums.runicgames.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2125
any help at all would be greatly appreciated :( .... i have tried running it in opengl .. following instructions above closely..still giving me the same swirling vortex of graphic glitches. ty!
lgtspecb, you are my hero :o I followed your instructions and everthing works fine :D Now I can run Torchlight in Opengl with good performance. I wanted to say that the full and correct path to the settings.txt file is: /home/dong/.wine/drive_c/windows/profiles/<username>/Application Data/runic games/torchlight At least on my system :) Now I can enjoy this fantastic game. Well okay, I have to set up the settings in the settings.txt cause trying to open the settings menu ingame leads to a crash. But thats okay. The thing that troubles me more is integrating this game into the desktop-environment. I can not minimize the game or tab away without getting into a "torchlight.exe not responding" situation. If someone has some hints on that I would appreciate any help or directions. Thanks
I do not know about this specific program. But keep in mind that there are many applications which have trouble with task switching (alt+tab) even running under a real Windows. There are two general solutions: 1- First, see if the game can run windowed. Then, if the title bar bothers you, you can reposition it(either manually or with a tool). 2- If that fails, you can run it inside a Wine Desktop. That way the application never knows that it has lost focus. --Stephen programmer, n: A red eyed, mumbling mammal capable of conversing with inanimate monsters. Thanks for the guide lgtspecb, I certainly never would have gotten Torchlight going without it. In case anyone else has the same problems as I experienced here is what I did differently from your guide: In Step 4 I just did 'sh ./winetricks vcrun2008'. For some reason including 'dcom98' screwed up everything and I couldn't run any wine programs afterward (had to regenerate my .wine dir). I was installing the Torchlight demo via Steam (I assume this applies to the full version as well), you have make sure after you've downloaded it to exit Steam (including the tray app). Otherwise when you try to run the game in safemode it won't work since Steam is already running not in safemode. Maybe this is obvious to others but it took me a bit. The demo runs well for me. It gets a little laggy sometimes but maybe I can play with the detail settings a bit. Annoyingly trying to enter the settings menu in-game causes Torchlight to crash but I can manually edit settings.txt.
