Try some different quality settings and see for yourself. If you can put up with 128k mp3 (YUCK!) then you'll probably be fine with "-q 0" or "-q 1". Personally I'm very happy with "-q 4.99" just below the lossless encoding threshold. ----- Original Message ----- From: gabor <gabor@realtime.sk> Date: Thursday, April 18, 2002 6:11 am Subject: [vorbis] what quality ?> hi, > > what quality is recommended to encode to for cd quality? > > i mean, for mp3, i used to encode to 128kb/s ( maybe it's a bit low.. > ).. > so what quality ( or bitrate ) do you recommend? > > thanks, > gabor > > p.s: i'm sure this queston was asked here at least 1000x but it's hard > to search for 'bitrate' here :-) > > > > > --- >8 ---- > List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ > Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/ > To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to 'vorbis- > request@xiph.org'containing only the word 'unsubscribe' in the > body. gabor wrote:> what quality is recommended to encode to for cd quality?I'd say the best level would be the one where you can't hear a difference to the original anymore. Maybe you want to add 0.5 to that to be safe, just in case your hearing improves/is trained a bit with time.> i mean, for mp3, i used to encode to 128kb/s ( maybe it's a bit low..Depending on what mp3 encoder you're used to, you might want to check out -q values between 2 and 4. In another mail you ask about the lossless stereo treshold. It's -q 5. Here, bitrates jump up a bit because the stereo picture will be complete. I use -q 5 for my music, because my hearing is most sensitive in stereo degration and temporal artifacts like pre-echo. Pre-echo is no problem for Ogg Vorbis, which is why my favorite is the lowest possible -q with lossless channel coupling. <p>Moritz --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to 'vorbis-request@xiph.org' containing only the word 'unsubscribe' in the body. begin gabor quotation:> what quality is recommended to encode to for cd quality? > > i mean, for mp3, i used to encode to 128kb/s ( maybe it's a bit low.. > ).. > so what quality ( or bitrate ) do you recommend? If you can stand to listen to 128kb/s MP3, then you'll probably find vorbis acceptable at almost any setting. Personally, I prefer -q5 (the lossless channel coupling seems to make a significant difference), but I suspect most people would find -q3 adequate. hi, what quality is recommended to encode to for cd quality? i mean, for mp3, i used to encode to 128kb/s ( maybe it's a bit low.. ).. so what quality ( or bitrate ) do you recommend? thanks, gabor p.s: i'm sure this queston was asked here at least 1000x but it's hard to search for 'bitrate' here :-) <p><p><p>--- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to 'vorbis-request@xiph.org' containing only the word 'unsubscribe' in the body.
