It won't be long until big labels attempt to eliminate the digital ins and outs of equipment. The problem they face is most people that currently use a rack system featuring digital interconnects will NEVER revert to an analog only system. I know that I won't! Think back to VHS, BetaMax, SVHS and LaserDisc. VHS has incredible market share because its licensing is open. Betamax was strangled by Sony. SVHS and LaserDisc failed to reach critical mass because they offered only incremental improvements and were not backward compatible. Attempts to supplant CD's with a product thas is only incrementally better will suffer the same fate as the above products - only a small number of adopters and not enough market saturation to fully replace the old standard. Currently DVD offers vast improvements over VHS AND it is backwards compatible with CD's. It misses one feature consumers have grown to love though - recordablity. This missing piece stops the death of VHS. as far as DataPlay info: try this link. <http://www.digitmag.co.uk/news/display_news.cfm?NewsID=772> I cannot imagine the RIAA embracing this device unless it eliminaties all possibilty of perfect digital extraction. They will need to push for every device to provide only analog outputs for pre-recorded media and prevent PC makers from incorporating it into computers (good luck!). Now I can throw my VHS deck out the window. -Dan --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to 'vorbis-request@xiph.org' containing only the word 'unsubscribe' in the body. That 2nd part was perfectly demonstrated with the MiniDisc. I never saw a PC drive for that one.> MylesDavid --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to 'vorbis-request@xiph.org' containing only the word 'unsubscribe' in the body. Actually, as far as I have read, the DataPlay format is what RIAA wants to replace CD. It doesnt fit my needs - ONLY WORM, too small, and the players look like shite. -Rob ----- Original Message ----- From: "Myles Buckley" <myles@conexsys.net> To: <vorbis@xiph.org> Sent: Thursday, April 05, 2001 4:19 PM Subject: OT: long - Replacing CD's? was RE: [vorbis] New type of copy-protected audio CDs are coming...> It won't be long until big labels attempt to eliminate the digital > ins and outs of equipment.
