OT: iBook or MacBook Pro?
Well, the worm has turned and I think I may actually get an Apple ;P. But I can''t decide which one. Pros and cons: 14" iBook: + modem (for when broadband kicks out, or on the road and there''s no WIFI) + screen is probably big enough (though I currently have a 15" Dell) + doesn''t get as hot as the MacBook + almost half the cost + less likely to get stolen -

Macbook for Rails Development
Hi All, I''ve finally got fed up of struggling with Windows and am on the verge of splashing out on a Macbook for Ruby/Rails development. I''ve seen DHH''s post about it on loudthinking but I wondered if anyone else has any more wisdom... Is it worth it over a powerbook? Any tips on good OSX apps for Rails dev (textmate, i know already)? Anything not working well on

Convince me to buy TextMate!
I got a Powerbook recently and am debating buying TextMate. I installed the trial and have checked it out, but don''t see what''s so great about it. AFAICS it''s the Ruby and Rails macros for expansion and other stuff that might be it. Other than that, TextMate seems like a pretty basic editor. I currently use PSPad and Editplus, and I could probably get/make macros

OS for rails development: Windows vs. Mac?
Caveat: this is not a discussion about *hosting* a rails app on windows. Anyway...Macs are everywhere you look when researching rails (demo vids, tutorials, and pictures from rails training classes). I''m interested in what the pros to using a Mac for rails development are (besides textmate). Is it more of a cultural thing, a what would 37 signals do thing, is it a unix thing, or

RVM on a Macbook
I have a Macbook with Snow Leopard and Macports. I have successfully run the script displayed below the heading "The following script will boostrap git + RVM..." on the page: http://rvm.beginrescueend.com/rvm/install/ However I can find no .bash_profile or .bashrc on my machine. The closest existing files are .profile in my root, .bash_login in my root, and setup.bash.in in a subfolder

favored development environment
I am about to purchase a laptop strictly for development (ruby & rails) and then leverage my existing large screen monitor with it when in the office. Laptop monitor for running tests, large screen for development etc. Wondering what the consensus is now on most ideal environment for rails at this point? Macbook pro + textmate? Pc with unbuntu + vim(or whatever)? what are most professional

IDE recommendations?
I was wondering if there are any IDEs out there that has autocomplete features for win32. It would be perfect if it could do something akin to what DHH is doing on the screencast hosted on the rails website. http://media.rubyonrails.org/video/rails_take2_with_sound.mov Cheers -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

file_column and versions acting up...about to spit blood and kill people. please help.
Hey railsers...anyone run into this problem? I''m developing an app which I''m deploying with Capistrano. That being said, I''ve stuck all the file_column goodies in public/system/... During my deployment script I chmod -R that directory and everything in it to make sure www-data (the apache user/group) has access to it. In development mode on my Macbook I can upload

Rails on a Mac - I''ve seen the light
Well I finally broke down and got me one of those Intel iMacs and a copy of Textmate. It took me a bit to get use to Textmate but once I learned some of the shortcuts I was cruising. Mac OS X took very little time to get used to as I already had a decent *nix background. Up until this point I had been primarily on Windows. Some of the productivity highlights I''ve found: 1. Might be buying a Mac
I might be buying a Mac tomorrow. I checked out the new 13.3in MacBook at the new Apple Store on 5th ave in NYC. I''m torn between the smaller MacBook and the MacBook Pro. We have a pro at work and I''m not that thrilled with the way it feels. I like the keyboard much better on the 13inch. However, I think doing development on that small of a screen could get frustrating. Any

[Markaby] yield instead of @content_for_layout?
We''re supposed to use yield instead of @content_for_layout, but I can''t get yield to work in a Markaby template: yield text yield Either one of these lines results in a ''no block given'' error (but ''text @content_for_layout'' works). Anybody know how to use yield instead? Thanks, Joe -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

Re: TextMate Bundle using Gedit
For what I know you can''t use the TM bundles... But like mgutz pointed there''s a lot of plugins. There is some alternatives to achieve something like TM bundles. Look at this links: - GMate - http://github.com/lexrupy/gmate/ (http:// alexandredasilva.wordpress.com/gmate/) - gedit-rails - http://github.com/mig/gedit-rails/ Think that GMate is the most complete. I use these as

Best Environment for development
This is a newb question, and probably one that is a matter of taste more than objective merit. I''m working on a home server, running Linux [FC 4], hosting a website [look for generocities.com shortly]. I have a delightful new Windows XP Pro Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop. What would the community recommend for the environment in which I develop? I don''t mean technologies like RoR

Rails Development on a Mac Mini?
How many people out there are doing Rails development on a Mac Mini? I''ve been eyeing up the MacBook as well as the new MacMini trying to decide if I want to splurge. I''ve been doing very little Rails development thus far which makes the investment a little hard to justify. The Free Mini Mac ( http://minimacs.freepay.com/?r=16778073) offer seems like the best route but

Experiences with CentOS & MacBook Pro?
Ok, I'm finally of a mindset to replace my now tired, aging Dell Inspiron 600m. I'm currently running Fedora Core on it, and am fairly happy with the software. Has anybody used CentOS on a Macbook Pro? What gotchas are there? (The first that comes to mind is the lack of a right mousebutton) Scouting on the Internet, I've seen that some people have trouble getting sound to work.

Almost desperate on rsync from macbook to NAS
Hello list. I'm almost getting exhausted, thus I have to bother you people to get some help. I simply want to sync my "iTunes Music" folder from my MacBook over to my NAS. The scenario is like this: source path: "/Users/bonny/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/" (in here there are all the subfolders I want to sync over to the NAS); destination: "rsync://root at

For MacBook, best way to do R?
I'm getting a MacBook and I'd like to stick with OS X rather than convert it to Linux just yet. However, my main concern is having decent performance. What's my best option: *use the existing binary for R? *compile R fresh under OS X? * install Linux and run R under that? Does anyone have any recent experience they can share? Thanks! -- I can answer any question. "I

CentOS 5 Beta on a MacBook Pro
FYI, I just installed CentOS 5 beta with the SMP kernel in a VMWare fusion virtual machine on my 2.33 GHz 15 inch MacBook Pro. The installation was flawless. I installed from an NFS share on my network with the ISO images. The vm booted disc one and recognized my 802.11n wireless connection as eth0. The install took about 30 minutes. Everything worked fine... -Joe
