How to make Vorbis popular
Ogg Vorbis is still not known by the mainstream and not widely used
these days.
I've been thinking about this... MP3 is so popular because people can
download music for free (and thus pirating music).
I recommend Vorbis to everybody I know, but most of them refuse to even
try it because it's not popular (or because they are hardcore MP3
zealots), which results in a circle (little people

RE: Audio broadcasting... (fwd)
Hi vorbis dudes,
I've been trying to encourage vorbis use for a somewhat well known person
who is doing a weekly internet "radio" program. I guess they are finding
out that WMA isnt too cross platform :-)
Was wondering if someone could help out with these questions...
The encoding platform is windows...
Is vorbis suitable for 33.6k/56k streaming yet?
Would be a good opportunity

Ogg Vorbis Quality Analisis (+ bug) (+ misc)
I have run an ogg analisis using EAQUAL from -q 0 till
-q 10 evaluating bitrate and quality. The results are
shown in a nice graph, and can be seen here:
http://audio.sinderman.com/
One thing I have found is a bug, as it is cleary shown
by the blue lines. Other discoveries are written in that
page, and others are still evolving in my mind :)
The goals of this analisis is to help the developers

UTF8_LANG: a much better idea
I've found a much better solution; it's standard (in Unicode itself),
simple and more flexible: Unicode language tagging. It was made for just
this purpose, in fact.
A technical description is at http://www.unicode.org/unicode/reports/tr27/#tag
which, like all specs, makes it sound a bit more complicated than it
really is.
It comes down to this: mark the language of text with U+E0001

[Fwd: [Netjuke-users] getid3 dev on a coding spree...]
Just in case any enterprising souls out there feel up to the challenge
of determining play time and bitrate average for Ogg Vorbis files via
PHP, I send along this message from the programmer of the NetJuke
project. (http://netjuke.sourceforge.net)

TAG Standard - ENSEMBLE/PERFORMER tags
I've read through what I think is the entire thread and looked at the
standard in its current incarnation
(https://reactor-core.org/~djw/ogg-tags.txt). I have only one major problem
with the proposed standard at the moment. The existance of both PERFORMER
and ENSEMBLE tags. I think this is describing the same type of data

Something useful to contribute
Okay, since that last entry of mine was on the order of, "Here's another
useless almost-funny reply from Mr. Kerezman, please laugh politely
now," here's a piece of info that the Wintel users might find useful.

CDEX is coming along nicely as a ripping/encoding package for Windows. I
very happily use the latest beta, whatever that happens to be at the

Ogg Frog 1.0 feature set, release date set
I expect to release Ogg Frog 1.0 for public alpha test on Saturday,
August 12. The date might slip a little depending on how my current job
hunt goes; if I get a job sooner than I expect, I'll have to cut back on
my development which has been full-time for a while now.
The planned features are detailed at the page where the downloads will
eventually be found:

paypal donations to xiph
I think the main xiph.org homepage (http://www.xiph.org/) should have a
direct link to paypal donations for (vorbis/xiph/tarkin). I dug around
the webpages and couldn't find the link.

vorbis rebroadcaster?
Are there any rebroadcasters out there set up for vorbis streams?
A weekly internet radio program is looking to add vorbis to their codec
lineup, but needs a host to rebroadcast the vorbis uplink.
Right now they send Microsoft Media Encoder streams to Mindsnare who
rebroadcasts it from there.

portable vorbis players
Has anyone done a portable vorbis player yet?
Is the SA-1100 fast enough to do vorbis decoding? What are some embedded
boards that are fast enough currently?

Apologies -- spam filter mail
My apologies to this list for an automated spam reply which made its way
here recently. I've been advised of it by several subscribers off-list.
I've disabled the automated response feature of my spam filter (Lars
Wirzenius's "spamfilter" procmail recipies). I'm finding the tool
effective but overly aggressive -- if anyone here has experience with
this tool, I'd

Compile failure current SVN
Current SVN compilation fails on Win32 (Intel C++ compiler 9.0):

Just moved it up to the variable declaration block to solve it locally,
but as it's not valid C, I thought I'd mention it ;)
PS: With the same compiler, AGC fails horribly (Zlast goes to several

Parse Errors
Dear R Development Team,
Using Thomas Baier's R Com Server -- or a dll I am building which supports
an evaluate function that is based on Baier's function R_Proxy_evaluate
contained in proxy_impl.c -- when I issue an invalid command to R such as
"plo(x)" the program crashes. There is code in R_Proxy_evaluate to test for
a parse error before actually generating code and issuing
