Hi vorbis dudes, I've been trying to encourage vorbis use for a somewhat well known person who is doing a weekly internet "radio" program. I guess they are finding out that WMA isnt too cross platform :-) Was wondering if someone could help out with these questions... The encoding platform is windows... Is vorbis suitable for 33.6k/56k streaming yet? Would be a good opportunity for some vorbis publicity, if it works out. -Dan -- [-] Omae no subete no kichi wa ore no mono da. I've been to icecast.org and a couple other sites, but still don't know too much about the format. Since many of our listeners are not that technically inclined, we need to make it very easy for them to tune in. 1. We need to make a list of Vorbis players for different systems available 2. I'll need a recommendation for encoding software 3. You can hear a demo of this format at http://bumpy.braille.uwo.ca:9000/test.ogg (put this in your player, don't click on it). 1. We need to make a list of Vorbis players for different systems available vorbis.com is a start. You'll find the winamp plugin invaluable (there were aproximately 30 thousand people who'd grabbed it last time I looked which was a few weeks ago). 2. I'll need a recommendation for encoding software Either use the oddcast DSP plugin for winamp (http://www.oddsock.org) or ostream (http://www.radiostudio.org/ostream/). both seem to work for me. 3. We'll need a server to send the stream to Well, you'll obviously need an icecast2 server which you can get for win32 (see oddsock.org) or linux/unix. If you don't have somewhere to host it, I run one on a server with bandwidth which I am encouraging people to use. However, it is not my machine so if I were to offer this server, I'd like to know more info about the broadcast and some rough idea of bandwidth usage so that I can pass this on to the person who actually does own the server. If you downsample the file to 22khz you get a ~33k stream. you could go lower, but I think realaudio (and maybe wma) sounds better with very low bitrates. I hope the RC1 encoder will improve low bitrates. 1. see www.vorbis.com and www.jcraft.com/jorbis 2. http://radiostudio.org/ostream and then download version 0.7.0. 3. icecast2 -> http://i.cantcode.com/~jack/icecast.html On Mon, 16 Jul 2001 15:18:55 -0700 (PDT), Dan Hollis wrote:>Hi vorbis dudes, > >I've been trying to encourage vorbis use for a somewhat well known person >who is doing a weekly internet "radio" program. I know others have already replied, but this was in my 'it's important, make sure to comment' pile...> I've been trying to encourage vorbis use for a somewhat well known person > who is doing a weekly internet "radio" program. Production ready will happen within a month though, and there will be no gotchas going from what's currently available to upcoming improved versions. The code as things stand right now is perfectly stable, but it's not well tuned for quality at low bitrate.
