live streaming
2 May 2001
Can the Ogg Vorbis program be used to stream live audio
over the Internet? Or is it restricted to the creation of
files that have to be downloaded and then played on a
computer?
Put another way, can Ogg Vorbis doe what "Real Audio"
does, but without the onerous restrictions?

live streaming (from microphone to HTTP)
Can anyone share some ideas or point me to some documentation on how I can
easily begin streaming live audio?
My input would be /dev/audio (my microphone or soundcard
input).
Is there some type of small HTTP server that can use this /dev/audio piped
through oggenc (or the ogg vorbis library built into the httpd)?
Or do I use a FIFO and any regular httpd?
(I am running NetBSD.)
Thanks,

WinAmp Streaming
I'm currently working on adding streaming capabilities to the WinAmp plugin
and was wondering if I'm duplicating anyone else's work.
Right now it's about half done. I'll be submitting the changes when it's
finished (if I can figure out how to work CVS :-).

Re: HTTP Streaming
Okay, this is similar to how the mp3 streaming was.
The question is then, what is the MIME type for the
playlist itself? For mp3s, it used to be
audio/x-mpegurl??
Thanks,
Matt

Streaming
Hi,
I have been browins through the archives for a bit now, however I cannot
seem to find any direct answer to a question I have. What streaming tools
are/will be available for ogg vorbis?
I found this quote on vorbis.com:
"What about streaming in Ogg Vorbis format?
Streaming is an important component of Vorbis. The format has
been designed from the ground-up to be easily streamable. The

icecast 2.0 semi-permanent test stream
Icecast 2.0 and Ices 2.0 are both fairly usable now.
I have set up a semi-permanent test stream for people to bang on at:

Please report any problems you have.
I say semi-permanent, because it will probably crash now and then, and I
will be developing and putting up the new versions on a regular basis.

[thomas@arkena.com: [vorbis] mp3pro and the mp3 streaming license]
Thomas,
You should post this hear, as it's just as relevant ;)
Hey guys, how do you feel now that you all owe Thompson $2k per year?
Vorbis look more interesting now :)
It's really disgusting how the technology is now worth more than the
music.

streaming and VBR
Hi list,
I have a very anoying problem when streaming ogg vorbis: due to the
variable bitrate encoding data rates sometimes drop to a very low value
when there is no audio input signal. After a while the server (Icecast2)
just drops my stream because no new ogg pages arrive.
For streaming I use a software that I have written but I can't find a
way to tell it to never drop data rate below a

Vorbis newbie questions
Greetings:
I'm writing an article for the O'Reilly Network, and the focus is on
streaming audio with Linux. I would like to include material concerning
Vorbis, but I need some information:
1) What's up with www.vorbis.com and www.icecast.org ? Can anyone
say when they'll be back on-line ?
2) Where should I go to get the latest Vorbis sources ?
3) What players,

I'm confused -- isn't audio/vorbis in the present RFC? Or is that application/Ogg?
BTW I don't mean to complain, this is great stuff you guys are doing. I'd love to help any way I can.

some more questions and an emergency
Greetings:
Again, many thanks for the directions given me by members of this
group. I've successfully built and installed the latest CVS OggVorbis
code (as of 20 Feb 2001) and have been creating and playing my own OGG
files. However, I have a question about retrieving Icecast 2.0.
I'm coming to the end of my article and I'm describing how to set up
Icecast for streaming MP3s and

A large streaming project
Hi
I've just become involved in a company that is starting a new large
project which involves streaming thousands of Internet radio stations,
possibly up to 8000. They were heading towards the Windows Media format
but I mentioned Ogg Vorbis streaming and they are interested. This will
be a major boost to Ogg Vorbis in the market place if they decide to do it.
I'm not exactly sure

multicast (was streaming)
Hi Jack, Ross & all...
We have been working with V-Trails in refining their solution for Mp3
streaming and will be bearing the fruits of this labor starting this weekend
publicly with 5 different "Audiorealm Network" stations for first initial
public testing - after final testing we look to release this solution
NETWORK wide - making the Audiorealm.com Network effectively the first

some questions: client for ultralinux and streaming
Greetings,
I am rather new to OGG or streaming, so I like to ask some questions:
First, clients:
I have a sun ultra-sparc 5 running linux.
What clients can I use?
The xmms (that came with the redhat 6.2 installation) does not have the
vorbis-pluging, and -I guess- the xmms-plugin that's on the vorbis-website
is for intel-linux?
Where could I get the source for the plugin and (if

xml stream formats
Speaking of Metadata, how's work going on the definition?
Looking back at the list archives, there seems to be a semi-plan to use
Robert Kay's DTD from http://www.cdindex.org/dtd/TrackInfo.dtd, but I'm
conserned that it's too specialized for video and we'll end up having a
special case for audio-only files.
There are a couple of general issues here. Micheal Smith suggested on

How do I list in YP? icecast2 ices0
Hi Rob
The stream format has nothing to do with your audio files. I probably
have 70% MP3's and 30% Ogg Vorbis files, and 1 or 2 WAV files for
jingles on my hard drive. I only encode new CD's to Ogg Vorbis.
But my station is streaming in AAC+ format, and I have also streamed in
Ogg Vorbis format simultaneously. There is no way I would bother
streaming in MP3 format. It's 15+

Maybe another and easier way would be to implement the ogg vorbis
format in Real Networks "open sourced" Helix streaming server
