Which features would you like to see on the crantastic.org community portal?
Hi,
As some of you know, one of the R Projects ideas for GSOC 2009 is to
expand the crantastic.org portal. Some ideas for what should be done
is mentioned in Hadley Wickham's project description [1], others have
been briefly mentioned on this mailing list before. Undoubtedly,
however, there are many other good ideas out there that could be
implemented. Please suggest any ideas you might have

R vs octave development strategy (and success)
Hi All,
if memory serves me well I recall some paper comparing the relative success in getting mainstream acceptance (as mainstream as statistics can be) of both R and Octave. I remember vaguely that the fact the development strategies (core team vs one main developer) played a major role in the relative success of the two programs. I tried to find this paper, but my goggle skills are failing

CRAN + geography = Cranography
In response to an earlier discussion about finding the
fastest/best/nearest CRAN site, I geocoded (using my geonames package)
the locations of the CRAN sites returned by getCRANmirrors. I've
mapped them here:
http://www.maths.lancs.ac.uk/~rowlings/R/Cranography/
The geocoding may have got it wrong, so if CRAN site maintainers want
to send me a real lat-long (in WGS 84 aka EPSG:4326) I'll

Modify objects in function
Dear R community,
I do know, that an R function is constructing a copy of any object passed as argument into a function. I program on a larger S4 project for a package, and I arrived at a point where I have to think a little harder on implementation style (especially to spare users complex object handling).
I have a function foo(), taking as input arguments two S4 objects of different class

On Reproducible Code
We often refer requesters to the Posting Guide and chide them for not
reading it. Recently I had occasion to re-read the Posting Guide which is
for all R lists not just R-help. The word "reproducible" does not appear
anywhere in the guide. The closest it comes is the following suggestion:
"Sometimes it helps to provide a small example that someone can actually
run."

Standards for delivery of GPL software in CRAN packages
I wondered if there were standard practices in CRAN for delivery of R source implementing functions in R packages. I has encountered a couple of packages where the gzipped version of source contains very little, primarily the Help files describing the functions in the package. In some cases I can find the source as the value of the function name.
Given that these packages are released as GPL,

Suggestion to add crantastic to resources section on posting guide
Under the "further resources" section I'd like to suggest the following
addition :
* http://crantastic.org/ lists popular packages according to other users
votes. Consider briefly reviewing the top 30 packages before posting to
r-help since someone may have already released a package that solves your
problem.
Thats just a straw man idea so I hope there will be answer, or

Wiki/revision control to management of CRAN package repository
I propose the following humbly, with little know how as to how to implement, and realize it may have been proposed many times. It is just something I had on my mind.
Would it be possible/desirable to have the whole CRAN package repository accessible through a public wiki, forge or version control interface (ideally a fusion of the wiki and forge approach)?
It appears it would be a first for a

Is the fifo significant here? If I read the same R code from a file
via `<` I get the input echoed (R 3.4.4, Ubuntu).

R-forge getting the wrong package
After accusing someone of typing 'install.packages("weather")' instead
of 'install.packages("webmaps")', I discovered that R-forge really is
currently returning the wrong source tarball for packages after
'Repitools' in the alphabet.
The data returned from available.package in install.packages goes out
of sync at 'Repitools':
