tripwire
Tripwire is probably one of must-have utilities for many system administrators. However, it is missing from almost all recent Red Hattish distributions. IMO, probably due to the fact that source compiles only on i386, and needs patches to compile almost every time new major version of gcc is released. However, in absence of good replacement, this is all we have. (IMO, other tools such as AIDE

Video and audio not in sync
I had some shows on tivo that I figured I wanted to keep on a CD in case I might ever want to watch them again. (Not that you care, butthis really is for my own personal use. I wouldn't have the bandwidth to "share" this stuff even if I wanted to.) So I downloaded a 1 hour show with TiVo ToGo, and I jumped through a few hoops to "free the mpeg", and I got a nice 2 GB

OGG/OGM media container
Hi all, Xiph aims at developing open-standards media formats. Though xiph.org tells about vorbis/theora/flac/speex, nothing is mentioned about container to use (that is ogg/ogm). I have a few questions Is there a difference between ogg and ogm? I guess its only the extension that is different and everything else is same. Some tools (like ogmtools) are available to create ogm files. What is

List posting etiquette
Just a tag-on for the thread about list posting etiquette, etc., etc. The following is a link to an excellent (if wordy) how-to-do-it-right instruction manaual replete with links to other treatises on the topic. The entire text of this document is emailed to the mailing list on the 1st of each month. This is the Cadillac of etiquette manuals. http://www.linux-sxs.org/index2.html Enjoy, --

ogg movie out of png pics
Hi, I would like to create a movie out of a lot of png files. Using mencode I would do have something similar to mencoder "mf://*.png" -mf type=png:fps=5 -vf spp, scale -ovc lavc -o output.avi but I want to have an ogg format. I.e. an ogg movie How to do it? convert can convert the pngs to an mpg but not to an ogg! convert: unable to open module file

requireNamespace etiquette
I'm trying to resolve a problem of Namespaces and probably have misunderstood something basic. In my quantreg package the function crq() has as its first argument a formula that typically contains something like this: Surv(y, ...) ~ foo, where Surv is a function from the survival package which quantreg suggests. When this syntax is encountered in ordinary usage Surv is resolved, I believe,

list etiquette
Howdy folks: Please (I beg you, please!) don't follow the examples of a couple of recent posters. This is very bad form. If you want to get off the list, please don't send send a message to the list begging other readers to help (they can't). Only you can help stamp out forest fires (or get yourself off this list). At the top of every message from the list is a URL that can

Cisco 7960 backlight and list etiquette?
Hi I've taken apart a 7960 to fit a backlight to the LCD. Would others on the list be interested in this as a project when I've finished (i.e. should I document and photo all the stages)? Also I can source some 7960's at a very good price but what are the rules about posting this information on the list if others were interested? P

A problem of etiquette
Perhaps, the question is silly. But, I prefer asking it before making a mistake. I have just packed a binary distribution of R for Windows3.1/Win32s. It is equivalent to the previous one for Win95/NT (R-0.61.3 + many of the available packages) and it is compiled with egcs-mingw32 (GPL not a commercial compiler). Now, in preparing the README, I put the following sentence:

Email etiquette
Hello, When replying to emails, please remove any lines of the original text you are not replying to, especially if you are bottom-posting, to prevent people from having to scroll through pages and pages of useless quoted text. I would recommend people use inline replying instead of top- or bottom-posting, but as long as your emails look tidy I'll not make an issue of that :)

List-etiquette * AGAIN *
* Please DO NOT post the same message to two lists. We have divided the lists to be able to stay focused and lesser the burden. You are not raising the chances of getting a reply, you are instead annoying a lot of people. Most of the people on the -dev list are reading all other lists. * Please move all discussions about serviceproviders and other products and services around asterisk to the

I see from your answer below that this is no longer possible. If you run multiple copies of icecast, they will be completely separate, and work as two separate entities. I have run many instances of icecast on the same

Thread moderation and list etiquette (Reference - Another Fedora Decision)
Hi Jim, Thanks for putting in the effort here. It's never a good situation to have to moderate, but sometimes it is necessary. >From my perspective, this kind of thing happens far more often than the current example, though maybe not with such intensity. This situation forces me to evaluate if replying to any message on this list is going to be worth the headache of the inevitable noise
