My company has, very generously, donated a space on their rack and a server for me to use for development of a more up to date Shorewall webmin interface. Based on the advice here, I''ve also signed up for a sourceforge account, and will register the project later today. I would like to solicit the help of a few people on here who are willing to help move this project along. There were initially about 5 people who seemed really interested in helping with this project. If you are still interested, please drop me a line off-list. For everyone else, it would be really helpful to have a list of things you''d like to see in the new Shorewall module. Depending on the developer bandwidth, we''ll probably need to prioritize new features. I think it would be best to focus on the things that would help the most people.

The configuration files are actually not even that hard to edit, and contain many usefull examples. What i found a bit harder was locating all the files (like the actions file) , and that there are a lot of files that are not often needed, which confuse the beginner. Webmin might help if it worked like a kind of wizard, where you select the type of setup you want, and it then walks you through editing the correct config files, while linking to, or showing, the appropriate documentation... I like the Swat built in help and definitions. I like staring at the files too. Keeping the comments embedded in the files takes a lot of effort from Tom, but they are well worth it. Any webmin tool should preserve them, because often all you have is ssh access to your servers, and if you screw up you don''t even have that... -- John Andersen - NORCOM http://www.norcomsoftware.com/
Helo, I totally agree on your point of view, but please let me add the following 1) Shorewall does not have a builting utility to examine log files, Although log files in a firewall is very important thing - I agree there are alot of third parties, but if we include that, will be very good thing 2) Why do not we do something like Mandrake MNF - It may be not a very good idea, but we brain storm - I do not know on which license it is distributed, but about about the idea in general Thank you Samer>From: Richard Bennett <richard.bennett@skynet.be> >Reply-To: Mailing List for Shorewall Users ><shorewall-users@lists.shorewall.net> >To: Gary Buckmaster <inherently.evil@gmail.com>,Mailing List for Shorewall >Users <shorewall-users@lists.shorewall.net> >Subject: Re: [Shorewall-users] Shorewall GUI Interface - Redux >Date: Sun, 6 Mar 2005 09:41:43 +0100 > >On Saturday 05 March 2005 17:51, Gary Buckmaster wrote: > > For everyone else, it would be really helpful to have a list of things > > you''d like to see in the new Shorewall module. > >Hi, >The strength of shorewall is the superb documentation. >The configuration files are actually not even that hard to edit, and >contain >many usefull examples. >What i found a bit harder was locating all the files (like the actions >file) , >and that there are a lot of files that are not often needed, which confuse >the beginner. > >Webmin might help if it worked like a kind of wizard, where you select the >type of setup you want, and it then walks you through editing the correct >config files, while linking to, or showing, the appropriate >documentation... > >Richard. >_______________________________________________ >Shorewall-users mailing list >Post: Shorewall-users@lists.shorewall.net >Subscribe/Unsubscribe: >https://lists.shorewall.net/mailman/listinfo/shorewall-users >Support: http://www.shorewall.net/support.htm >FAQ: http://www.shorewall.net/FAQ.htm_________________________________________________________________ FREE pop-up blocking with the new MSN Toolbar - get it now! http://toolbar.msn.click-url.com/go/onm00200415ave/direct/01/
