More likely, crap hardware, which is awfully hard to avoid in USB-land.
Just the other day, I traced a machine that failed to reboot to an external USB disk. Unplug it, machine boots right up. Move the same disk to a machine as

simple list question (question withdrawn)
My apology to the list, as it turns out the moment after I hit the send
button, I found that the first element in the list was a null. The error
message reflects that.

Thanks for the thoughts. Even with 'dmesg', I
found nothing. The reboot got rid of the problem
and it continues to run perfectly in the same configuration.
I, too, have a slight dislike for external USB
disks, and much prefer internal drives for esveral reasons:

tower and thus have less chance of falling or

Dear R developers,
This is a rather peculiar question, but nevertheless I would still need an
answer for.
It is about an R package which I created (namely QCA), and from versions
1.0-0 to 1.1-4 I had a co-author.
The co-author recently withdrawn from the package development, but still
requires to be left in the authors list and be cited for the package in the
CITATION file.
Obviously, one could not require citations for further developments, but
don't know how exactly to proceed (I would like to be fair and comply to
rules).

John--
Thanks for the suggestion. I finally had a chance to get to the
system in question, It was the only one of many that exhibited the
USB hang. I tried a reboot with the two USB disks
disconnected. Everything worked. I plugged them in, and then did
both "lsusb -v" and "lshw", and again, everything worked.
Continuing my test:
Reboot with both drives plugged in:

Libvorbis documentation.
...I also downloaded the SDK for Mac OSX, which sorta contains a
documentation for libvorbis, but several critical details are missing,
and it seems like half or less than the full document. Does anyone know
anything about this, and is the documentation available somewhere?
..or has is maybe been withdrawn to allow for some API changes in the
future?
Sincerly,

dnf and failing epel

it seems it might be Centos' problem, on some of my other
boxes I find: libsolv-0.6.14-1.el7.x86_64 and I wonder if it
had been in the repos and later withdrawn and now absent?
And instead we have: libsolv-0.6.11-1.el7.x86_64 - which is
the culprit.

Parameterized Samples Withdrawn
Although the parameterized samples have allowed people to get a firewall
up and running quickly, they have unfortunately set the wrong level of
expectation among those who have used them. I am therefore withdrawing
support for the samples and I am recommending that they not be used in new
Shorewall installations.

Fedora 29 upgrade: texlive-scheme-medium may depend on R (texlive-includernw)
...texlive-includernw, which necessarily depends on R-knitr.
Thanks for the analysis. I do not see that any other latex package in
texlive-sceme-medium involves creating such havoc drawing in non-texlive
packages.
I appeal to Andreas Storvik Strauman to ensure that texlive-includernw is
forthwith withdrawn from texlive-collection-mathscience, because of its
side-effects.
It may be useful, but actually Rnw files would only need R anyway, and
bringinging such a payload is really very bad for everybody not exposed to
this behaviour previously. I wasted a lot of time trying to see why Rcpp
could not...

NUT uses port 3493 for everything
...e an officially assigned port.
Port 3494 was at one time assigned to
ibm3494 3494/tcp # IBM 3494 [Jeffrey_Pilch]
ibm3494 3494/udp # IBM 3494 [Jeffrey_Pilch]
The IBM 3494 is a huge tape cartridge device. Over 6000 cartridges at a time!
It was announced 1995, withdrawn from marketing 2006 and service was
discontinued 2018.
I see that the port 3494 has disappeared from /etc/services in Debian 9. Is it
possible to aquire the port for NUT?

bug (?) in [.data.frame with matrix-like indexing
...c(FALSE, FALSE, FALSE, FALSE, TRUE)]
## Error in .subset2(xx, j) : attempt to select less than one element
i.e. matrix-like indexing on data.frames, one logically-indexed
dimension with only one value TRUE in it.
It is not documented to work, but it did so in former versions of R.
Is it a bug or withdrawn support?

Natural Language Toolkit for R - is it still there?
Hi
I used the package Natural Language Toolkit about a year ago to parse
strings into parts of speech. However, I cannot find it on CRAN.
Has it been withdrawn?
Thanks

http://www.w3schools.com/tags/att_ol_type.asp states
"Differences Between HTML 4.01 and HTML5
The type attribute of the <ol> element is no longer deprecated in

If something is "deprecated" it is supposed to work until it is
withdrawn or cancelled.
Is Firefox's inability to render <ol type="a"> a bug or a very annoying
irritation especially as I have hundreds of hand-coded pages using it ?

Windows RConsole Focus
Hi,
I was looking for a Windows-specific R function to focus the
console window and couldn't find one. The motivation is that
after loading the tcltk package, the "main" Tk window "." is
presumably focused but then immediately withdrawn (hidden) so
the RConsole loses its focus and you have to click on it to
continue typing.
Would there be any interest in including a winConsoleFocus()
function in R at some stage or is it already there?
I tried implementing a quick solution (below) which seemes
to work.

James
