Samba - XP performance problem
...and noone posted a reasonable answer to this: Using Samba 3 with XP gets bad performance. I tested this on Tru64 5.1b and FreeBSD 5.3 with the very same symptoms. The throughput bw XP and Samba goes up and down. It starts transfering with a reasonable speed and after having transfered around 16 megs it slows down. I tried many configuration options regarding locking, tcp settings, xmit size and every combination that could make any sense for me. Then I gave up with this configuration mess as I could lower the performnce easily, but the performance jittering was the same. Now a few notes...

Centos 7.0 and mismatched swap file
...new mail server for our firm using a SuperMicro with Centos 7.0. When performed the install of the os, I put 16 gigs of memory in the wrong slots on the mother board which caused the SuperMicro to recognize 8 gigs instead of 16 gigs. When I installed Centos 7.0, this error made the swap file 8070 megs instead of what I would have expected to be a over 16000 megs. I am using the default xfs file system on the other partitions. Is there a way to expand the swap file? If not, then is this problem sufficiently bad enough for me to start over with a new install. I do not want to start over unles...

saving and loading complex objects
Dear Sir: When I try to save large and very complex recursive objects with some components containing models (such as the output from arima or lm ), the resulting file sizes increase by 4 meg per save. example directory: amex 8 meg argentina 12 meg australia 16 meg ... Moreover, I am unable to read these file objects back into R. I note that readBin and writeBin are only for single mode data such as numeric. Here is a section of my program or script:...

what am I doing wrong
I am seeing some rather strange behavior with synch of 2 directories on the same system using 2.6.2. The older file is the image of a full backup and is 29Gig in size. The new image is a slice of an incremental backup and is 101Meg in size. the command line is: time /home/wally/rsync/rsync-2.6.2 -av --rsh=rsh --backup --stats --block-size=<xxx> --write-batch=kbup1aaa /test/Kibbutz/Kbup_1.aaa /test/Kibbutz/work What I am observing in /test/Kibbutz/work is a file .Kbup_1.aaa.AZVyuT that is 35 Meg in size after an overn...

lli size
Hey there, Been googling but can't find. Thought to ask the wizards. The LLVM interpreter. I am creating a simple wrapper around it to run a script. The program after linking is about 25 megs stripped of debug symbols. This seems a bit large. Is it possible that this could somehow to be drastically reduced? Is it worth going and trying to rip things out? The code which instantiates the interpreter is here: https://github.com/timprepscius/llvmscriptdemo/blob/master/src/llvmscriptdem...

How to fit Oggs in a specific amount of space?
I took 5 albums (Classical music) and converted them to Ogg Vorbis at "Full Bitrate" (-q10) and all 5 directories take up about 775 Megs which won't fit on a CD. So I ripped them again in WAV first (And give my friend back his CDs) but now I wanna know what quality setting should I use to fit them on 1 CD (The highest possible with total space used just under 700 Megs) Is there a tool available that will analyse W...

bandwidth requirement
Hi Folks, have a question, on bandwidth. I want to run an asterisk server SIP to H323, g729. Calls arrive on sip/iax go to IVR get authenticated and egress through h323. So G729 license is only used during IVR and then it is pass through. I am collocating this server. Colo offer a monthly bandwidth quota. Lets say I want to do 100K minutes per month of VoIP calling at the beginning. What would

restricting bandwidth using TC
Hello, I am trying to get the TC command to work on our debian box to limit traffic in and out to 12 Meg. The command I am using is: tc qdisc add dev eth0 root tbf rate 12000kbit latency 25ms burst 1600 tc qdisc add dev eth1 root tbf rate 12000kbit latency 25ms burst 1600 The problem I am having is that the bandwidth exceeds the 12 Meg by almost 5 Meg. Any help is appreciated. Thanks M...

Absolute Minimum Installation Packages
...Linux/* installation size as small as possible. I'm wondering if anyone has looked at the installed packages list from the Redhat installation [rpm -qa] and has parsed out all packages not needed for * to run. I follow the custom install guide from Andy Powell but the installation yields 948+ Meg with 340 installed packages. I'm sure most of those packages can be eliminated. If the installation can be reduced to below, say 600 Meg, then there's an opportunity to harden * into a KNOPPIX Customization. BTW, has anyone already tried to produce a KNOPPIX * Customization? Th...

Slow Copy WinXX - Linux/Samba :-(
I never thought it would happen to me, but it did... I have read threads about slow copies from WinXX to Linux/Samba on the list in the past, but I don't recall a concise answer regarding what the cause was. THE PROBLEM: Trying to copy an 8 meg file from Win95 to my Linux/Samba box (named "Nemesis" - for good reason), the transfer speed slows to a crawl. The Win95 copy dialog box starts out by saying 25 seconds remaining , then 60 seconds remaining, then 2 minutes, then 5 minutes, and so on. I HAVE NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM IN THE...

Memcached Server - Memory Consumption
I was just testing the memcache server on a Windows box and had set it up as a Windows Service and to my surprise (or my shock really) it was using 47+ meg of ram with no data even loaded in it yet. Has anyone else used the Windows port of memcached for their Rails projects and if so how much ram was it using? Does memcached use less memory on Mac OS X or Linux than Windows? Thanks for any feedback -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/. --~...

R for large data
...ean" the data of unnecessary elements. (i.e. database storage or external data manipulation doesn't get me very far) Over the past couple of years I've used Stata (prior to that SAS, etc). I have 2 gigs of memory, but R seems pretty slow to load relatively modest datasets of say 10-30 megs. Much slower to load than say Stata. For comparison, stats on loading a 32 meg datafile: R - 5.3 minutes Stata - 31 secs SPSS - 42 secs SAS - 21 secs I normally start R with the command line switch allowing it to use 600megs or so - stata is allocated 200 megs. I've allocated 1.5 gigs to st...

Running Portable Photoshop with Wine
Hey everyone, I'm new to this forum and new to Linux and anything having to do with it. I'm actually trying to solve a friend's problem. My apologies if anything I'm about to say turns out to be grossly ignorant... My friend is running Kubuntu on a Aspire One that has about 500 megs of space on it, most of which is taken up by the OS I'm assuming. She seems to have less than 10 megs of space left on her computer but wants to be able to run Photoshop on it. Due to the lack of space one of the things that comes to mind is running Portable Photoshop CS2 (the version I hear w...

[jason at server /app-vol/applications/]$ls -ld temp drwxr-xr-x 4 jason users 2899968 Feb 18 06:31 temp/ [jason at server /app-vol/applications/]$ How does the directory *itself* have a size of 2.8 megs? yes the contents in that temp directory add up to 2.8 megs, but.. umm. huh? when I run a stat on the temp directory, i get File: `temp' Size: 2899968 Blocks: 5672 IO Block: 4096 directory Device: fd02h/64770d Inode: 1836137 Links: 4 Access: (0755/drwxr-xr-x) Uid:...

wxruby.so size under Linux?
Today, I noticed that a completely clean build of wxRuby on my desktop machine is about 5.8 megs, but on my laptop is about 9.8 megs. Both computers are running Debian GNU/Linux, but my laptop is more of a mix of releases, whereas my desktop is almost entirely Sarge/Testing. Both are using gcc 3.3.3. In both cases, I did a full "get", and did a make from scratch. Any ideas abou...

Skype 4 Linux
Hi All, Since 21 june skype is available to be used on Linux, with a static binary, which includes QT, of 8 meg its big. http://www.skype.com/help_linux_faq.html I presume, with some hacking, there could be a possibility to use the Skype program as a Channel. (Eq. Skype is started, and with a visual scripting thing a connection is made and Asterisk connects via OSS (or the alsa emulation layer)). It is a...
