Disabling ActiveRecord "type" column subclassing
Hi! I have a legacy table that has a column named "type" and need to
remove this automatic subclassing by ActiveRecord. The api pages are
vague about this, and I tried
self.inheritance_column = "xtype"
which seemed to get me half-way. In the validate_on_create method, the
value of self.type was my model Class name.
How would you disable this feature?

PROPOSAL: The list needs to fork (desperately).
I''d like to propsoe that the RubyOnRails mailing list forks into three
lists.
PROBLEM:
* The list is getting swamped with traffic, making it hard to use and
even harder to follow.
* Many, many messages get lost, with no reply.
* Due to the overwhelming traffic, it''s hard for beginners to get the
help that they need, since their messages get lost in the shuffle, and

draft of posting guide
Here is a first draft of a guide for posters to r-help and
r-devel. Suggestions on how to improve any aspect of it are
most welcome. Suggestions on ways to make it more concise
are especially welcome. Comments on which parts you like
or don't like are welcome. Rather than clutter up R-help with
lots of small corrections etc, please send them to me, and I
will try to incorporate and

Hey you Linux folks out there,
sry for asking these really bad nooby questions, but i dont get the hang of it...
Today i got my new Notebook with Linux Suse Entertainment Desktop 11 OS. I thought myself : " Now its the time to go with the time and use LINUX"...
Its not as easy as i thought. The use of the main functions is as easy as on windows, but i even dont know how to download

list demographics
Hi all,
I got curious about something, so in proper scientific fashion I
obtained some data and analyzed it.
Question: what is the female participation in the R-help email list?
Data: the most recent list postings, obtained from the website. I took
my best shot at classifying the names given in the email header as
male/female, but ended with a fair number of unknowns.
This dataset had 2797

Why should I answer a Newbie question, there thick!
It would be nice just for once to actually use a mailing list with people
who are a little more sympathetic to the fact that your not a rocket
scentist or molecular biologist and that you might actually need some
help,
without being made to feel like your completely useless and should be
cleaning toilets for a living.
"Ahhh man not another stupid newbie question! are these people completely

I think there is a lot more programming talent in the greater
user/hacker community around ZFS, including active askers on this
list, Linux/BSD porters, and probably many more people who just
occasionally hit upon our discussions here by googling up their
questions. I mean programmers ready to dedicate some time to ZFS,
which are held back by not fully understanding the architecture,
and just do not start their deve...

functions calling functions
I think I may be missing a fundamental concept I hope someone can help
me with. I have functions that won''t call other functions. Particularly
after an Ajax request.
In the following object the ajax request onComplete calls the
ajaxFetched function successfully. ajaxFetched tries to call function2
but function2 does not execute.
Any ideas or workarounds?
thanks

Status of samba projects
Hello list members,
I'm slightly confused as to the status of the samba project(s), and was
wondering if someone here could give an authoritative answer to what the
situation is.
Is it correct that the current latest stable version 2.0.7 is being developed
into 2.2 by a continuation of the "original" team?
And samba TNG is working on a different approach which will be version
