As I said, I do not have any 32 bit computers, so I checked and Debian
still provides 32 bit iso's and 32 bit Samba packages.

The thing is, you could hitting tests that are known to fail, so you
could be worrying about nothing.

However, I suggest you try upgrading to bookworm and with it Samba from
backports.

Thank you for the suggestion. I'm not sure why I have been so convinced
that "Buster" was the last 32-bit release of Debian, but I will
investigate. On a personal note, I will mention that I was programming and
using Gnu/Linux for many years and then stopped any kind of such, aside
from email, for about 8 years. I lost a lot of knowledge in  that time and
have been slowly, painfully re-learning. And relying heavily on people
like you to offer me a clue here and there.
