Vorbis got TheRegistered

In the press, once again
May be a little bit off topic, but this gave me hard laugh: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/09/24/sysadmin_file_tools/ Windows admins use a virtualized CentOS machine to copy files because their own tools are not able to handle copying a bigger amount of data. :) Cheers, Timo

Red Hat is Planning To Deprecate KDE on RHEL By 2024
https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/11/02/rhel_deprecates_kde/ That's still several years in the future, of course. I use Mate on all of my machines rather than Gnome or KDE and I'm sure many of you fine folks do the same. But it's interesting nonetheless. -- MELVILLE THEATRE ~ Real D 3D Digital Cinema ~ ww...

OFF TOPIC: chatGPT glibly produces a lot of wrong answers?
...apologize in advance to those who may be offended. The byline: ******************************** "ChatGPT's odds of getting code questions correct are worse than a coin flip But its suggestions are so annoyingly plausible" ************************************* from here: https://www.theregister.com/2023/08/07/chatgpt_stack_overflow_ai/ Hmm... Perhaps not surprising. Sounds like some expert consultants I've met. ? Just for amusement. I am ignorant about this and have no strongly held views, Cheers to all, Bert [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

VoIP hackers gut Caller ID
The Register is carrying a article written by Kevin Poulsen of Securtiy Focus, calling asterisk "..the most powerful tool for manipulating and accessing CPN data.." > http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/07/07/hackers_gut_voip/ I hope NuFone doesn't drop asterisk-set-able callerid's after this article; i've been wanting that feature from voicepluse for a long time.

Windows API opens up???
Any thoughts on articles like this one - http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/02/21/microsoft_goes_open/. This mentions the Vista API, but I wonder about earlier API's. I also saw something the other day about source code for .Net being released as a "learning tool". Of course, all of this is in a bid to get Office XML approved as an ISO standard....

New glibc for CentOS-6 and CentOS-7 and CVE-2015-7547
...ss.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2015-7547 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1293532 Can't stress how important this update is .. here are a couple stories: http://arstechnica.com/security/2016/02/extremely-severe-bug-leaves-dizzying-number-of-apps-and-devices-vulnerable/ http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/02/16/glibc_linux_dns_vulernability/ Please note that the ONLY way this is tested to work is with ALL updates from CentOS-6 or CentOS-7 applied along with the glibc updates. So a yum update with base and updates repo enabled is the ONLY tested scenario. Did I say *ONLY* enough? Thank...

redhat vs centos
I have been reading the threads on here with great ernest about redhat making a move to throw off centos compilations. I read some stories about microsoft wanting to work closer with centos http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/05/17/microsoft_and_centos/ I have to update to centos 6 due to some needs of clients who need newer mysql and php (and installing them on centos5 was too hard for me). I am thinking of going ubuntu server but at the same time I have this feeling centos team will pull through, make a...

Paranoid Firewalling
After reading this article: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/08/31/blocking_chinese_ip_addresses/ I got to thinking that there is really no reason for *any* traffic to hit my servers that comes from anywhere outside North America. So I wrote the perl script at the end of this posting to extract selected IP ranges posted at iana.org and convert...
