Subject: [Samba] AD DNS scavenging and winbind:
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.4 (Tikanga)
Samba 3.0.33-3.15.el5_4.1
I have run into an issue where the DNS records added by a net ads join seem to
be being scavenged. From what I understand, Windows servers/workstations check
in (update their host record) on the AD DNS server on a regular basis. So the
question is, how can I have samba/winbind do the same?
I could just setup a cron job that executes: net ads dns register -P
But that's kind of ugly.
I know I can't be the first person to see this behavior. Is there a more
elegant solution?
Thanks

Is there any native way to mimic the below functionality of a windows
server/workstation? Or am I stuck with a cron job?

By default, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 reregister their A and
PTR resource records every 24 hours regardless of the computer's role.
