This sounds like it might be a "browser master server" war.
Anyone else agree / disagree.
In a Microsoft network using WINS, any computer starting on the network requests
(yells on the network) for who is the "Browse Master Server." If no
"Browse Master" responds within a timout period, then that computer
(could be an Server O.S. or Even Client O.S.) broadcasts that it is the
"Browse Master" and takes over / answers any other computers
requesting the address for the "Browse Master."
What we've done is via login scripts / or domain MS AD policy, is to disable
(a registry edit) all clients from becoming a "Browse Master Server."
Then allow a single server in every designated subnet (xxx.xxx.xxx.0 through
xxx.xxx.xxx.254) to be the "Browse Master."
I might be way off with this idea since I'm not a SAMBA guru. Just my 2
cents.

I have this problem. Window Xp machines show up in Network neighborhood
when they are started but after some time (20 minutes or more) they
disappear.
I can find them with search computer.
Mapped network drives still work.
They reappear if I restart the pc
They reappear if I restart Samba
Its only a small home network so I do not log in to a domain.
Whats going on?????
My samba.conf
