Folks, Over the past few weeks the Samba-HOWTO-Collection and the Samba-Guide have been significantly updated. Over the next 48 hours I hope to complete this process. Today I have added a new chapter to the Samba-3 by Example book (the Samba-Guide). within 24 hours all mirror site should be hosting the current update. I would very much appreciate review of the new chapter 8 and the rearrangement of the chapters over-all. The rearrangement is in response to requests I have recieved. I need to know the following: 1) Does the new arrangement of contents make sense? i.e.: Does it seem logical? If not, what should be changed? 2) Do the new Update and Migration chapters satisfy the demand for better documentation of the migration and update process? If not, what must be added to make this documentation complete? I would much appreciate feedback by Friday morning so that the suggestions can be included in this update campaign. Thank-you in anticipation of your responses. Please be just as direct and critical as necessary. I have noticed about three job ads in the local job search web sites in the past 2 weeks asking for someone to help migrate large companies from NT4 to Samba, so having something like what I suggested above in the NT4 Migration chapter is still relevant. Please John would you consider it? Regards Geoff Scott

You naughty, naughty documenter you.... ;-) As to whether your documentation is useful, it certainly is if you live in Australia and most of the list replies come from the other side of the world. Try fixing something urgently during work hours when no one else is awake. Regards Geoff Scott

Forward those to me?!? :-)Just bear with me a little. I am updating the entire chapter. As soon as I complete a test migration I am working on I will detail to this list this key to getting this working. The NT4 domain migration chapter will be up to date again on all mirrors by mid-morning tomorrow. - John T. -- John H Terpstra Samba-Team Member Phone: +1 (650) 580-8668 Author: The Official Samba-3 HOWTO & Reference Guide, ISBN: 0131453556 Samba-3 by Example, ISBN: 0131472216 Hardening Linux, ISBN: 0072254971 Other books in production.

When you upgrade naively, you get garbled umlauts, as the files are encoded in some codepage. People then store new files with UTF-8 encoding as they don't have 'unix charset' set correctly. The end result is a mix of both encodings that is *very* hairy to split again. You could mention Bj?rn Jacke's convmv. http://j3e.de/linux/convmv/.
