Winbind and case sensitivity (revisited)
Hi I've had a look through the archives and found this discussion on winbind and case sensitivity: http://lists.samba.org/archive/samba/2004-February/080321.html The issue is that winbind will in some cases return a username capitalized as per the NT database (ie when the user is looked up by uid), and in other cases as per the way the user typed it (ie when the user is looked up by

Rsync and filename codepages
...lename encoding (which Windows uses) and certain character sequences in linux filenames that are invalid. So I'd like to switch linux to be using UTF-8, does Rsync use the locale/LANG settings to convert filenames? Maybe I need to patch it and merge in a version of the useful linux util "convmv" so the user can specify a "from" and a "to" codepage. Any ideas, as this is causing serious problems on japanese systems. Regards --------------------------------- Q-Games, Dylan Cuthbert. http://www.q-games.com

Convert from ISO-8859-1 to UTF-8?
The server I am running Dovecot on is still using locale = ISO-8859-1 but I am thinking it is time to convert to UTF-8... Can I just use convmv to convert all the files in the mailboxes to UTF-8 or is there anything else I need to do? Do I need to run iconv to convert the content also or does dovecot/MUA fix this by it self? (i.e. they display the mail as encoded in ISO-8859-1) Regards, BTJ -- ----------------------------------------...

Mac clients trouble with NFD accented characters on Samba share
...homes] ??? ... [share] ??? ... [temp] ??? comment = on /home for tests, temp etc. ??? path = /home/temp ??? force user = alma ??? guest ok = Yes ??? read only = No I could set up a cron job to rename all the problem files and folders every night using convmv. But before doing that, I would like to make sure I'm not overlooking a simpler solution through the Samba configuration. Thanks for any help, MI

chinese characters
Hi, I am using SME server 6.0 which has samba preconfigured on it. We upgraded from MS Windows 2000 server. I am using the server in China and so many of the users wish to create files with Chinese characters in their names. File names with Chinese characters seem to cause all sorts of problems. They have trouble creating them, and files which are copied off backup (from the W2K system)

[sorta offtopic] Removing bad bytes from filenames
I'm moving my Ogg Vorbis collection off of my Linux server and onto my laptop. I plan on using iTunes to play my collection, but, that's a whole 'nother can of worms. I'm having trouble moving my complete collection over because dbPowerAmp (an application I used to love) made some dumb decisions about naming my files. For example, in track/album/artist names that contained a

Charset
I have upgraded on my debian server from samba 2.2.3 (stable ) to samba 3.0rc4 (unstable). The only problem that I have on my PDC is that italian character as ? (a') ? (u') etc. are non treated as they should and this can cause profiles non to load correctly. What should I do? THX Davide Parise E-Mail: d.parise@iskranet.it Cel.: +39 3333063640 FAX: +39 06233241981

samba 3 accented names case mangling with win 98
Hi all, banging my head on the wall here... I think I'll never really understand codepages stuff. smbd is v 3.0.1, client is french win98 - yuk my smb.conf reads: unix charset = UTF-8 display charset = UTF-8 dos charset = CP850 when I create a folder/file with accents in it, I can create it ok, but reading proves impossible. If i create file ??????, it shows ok in the file explorer

upgrade samba-2.2.8 to samba-3.0.2a (umlauts)
Hi, we run a samba 2.2.8 server and like to migrate to a faster, new server running samba 3.0.2a. I thought to copy all files from the old to the new one mounting the new shares by nfs. For a test I copied some files using scp. A problem concernes the german umlauts: on the old server they aren't displayed if I "ls" the files while browsing the share works fine. If I copy the

samba 3 ads/domain member server has some problems
hi, after we migrate our samba server SERVER from 2.x to 3.0.4 (which was not so easy and I can recommend everyone the convmv tool to convert the old filenames to the new one utf8), and we (finaly) able to join to the ADS server (the samba server is a simple ADS memeber server). we have a few problems: - the win2000 clients can see the shares on the samba server if and only if they are member of the same domain and th...

Codepage conversion between 2.2.8 and 3.0.14 - what's 2.2.8 default charset on disk?
...accessed only by samba (not locally from Linux) so even if I had inconsistent file names between samba and local shell access, I was not worried, but now that I need to upgrade Smaba, I need to mantain consistent names between samba 2.x and samba 3.x. I suppose I will need to run convmv on the directories that are shared by samba to translate the file names to UTF-8, but the question is: what charset is in use now? From the testparm output I could not guess it, so i don't know how to convert my files. -- Fabio "Kurgan" Muzzi
