When run by root, smbpasswd accesses the local smbpasswd file directly, thus enabling changes to be made even if smbd is not running. (and not in the client server mode it does a normal user) And this may be the difference when using smbpasswd on the unix promt to change root's smb and unix password. Which isn't working for me and I think it's good this way.
