samba - May 2003 - winbind and pam

does winbind necessarily use pam ?
because I use samba on a slackware 8.1 (which doesn't use pam) in domain
security mode and it seems like the authentification doesn't work (my
client can see shares bu con't write in it)

Sorry to repeat, but I think it's a simple question which could help me

my PDC is a W2000 Server and wbinfo works fine...

I think the pam part is only necessary when you want users known on the PDC to
be able to logon to your Linux machine (through telnet, SSH, rlogin, ...).
I'm not an expert though.
