Next month I will move about 3000 clients (w2k) to a PDC samba, after that I will have more 1200 clients, but this time will be Linux, my question is: 1- Is there domain logon, like we have for Windows users ? 2- is smb the protocol recommended to FileShare to Linux clients or NFS is better (is there another one) ? -------------- next part -------------- HTML attachment scrubbed and removed

I believe your below questions are referring to the additional 1200 Linux systems that you are going to be adding. If they are, then here is some potential answers for you... 1) LDAP, on Linux look for OpenLDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol.) if you are familiar with MS Active Directory, then you will have a decent base to start LDAP with. MS Active Directory appears, to me at least, to be a MS "Innovation" (ie. Copy) of LDAP.) LDAP can be used as the authentication component for Samba, Squid, E-mail and a number of other Linux/UNIX services. Thus, you can have Linux workstation users logon to the Windows workstations and vice versa, if you wish. They would be able to use the same username/password combination. I have yet to implement anything with LDAP myself. However, I have been advised that it makes managing large numbers of users and resources a much easier task. 2) You can use Samba as the file sharing system for Linux, however you might want to use NFS instead. I believe that there will be less overhead involved. (Don't quote me on that though.) I will be looking at configuring NFS for my network here as soon as I have my LDAP server configured and I need to get my other Linux server up acting as a BDC for my Samba PDC. Good luck and I hope what little information I have been able to share can help you along! Regards, Robert Adkins II IT Manager/Buyer Impel Industries, Inc. I think Samba+LDAP is the best bet for u. I have implemented this at my network successfully. It runs w/o any prob. You can go thr samba.idealx.org . I've seen more than a few issues (on this list) regarding accessing the same files with both samba and NFS ...all bad .... T o n y A.G. (Tony) Nichols I.S.
