samba - Jun 2002 - Rookie Question

Rookie Question
 
When I try to add a client machine (Win2k) to the domain I receive the
following error message. 
 
"Unknown user name or bad password."
 
It is asking for a user and password of a user with permission to join the
domain.  So I use the following:
 
Username: root
Pass: secret.
 
Is it impossible to add a user to the domain using only the GUI of the
client pc?   
 
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Irving,

Yes, it is entirely possible! If you want to use 'root', then
'root' must
also be in the smbpasswd file.
