[Samba] Win2000 - Very Slow opening files from Samba Share
Hello, I hope you can be of some assistance. I am using Samba 2.2.0 on SCO Open Server 5.0.5. I have a number of various clients on the Network eg Win 98 and Win 2000. My Unix Server is a PIII 1000, dual CPU computer with dual Raid 1 (mirroring disks) Samba is working well from the Win 98 Machines. However, from the Win 2000 machines when I try to open an Excel file from one of the Shared Samba drives for example it takes about 2 minutes to open. The same file only takes a couple of seconds to open from the local C drive. Are there some settings I need to set in the SMB.CONF file to cope with the mirroring. I hope someone out there can help. The solution was to add TCP_NODELAY to the socket options in smb.conf. I don't have any evidence, but I also suspect that this could be caused by name resolution. You may want to verify the setup of your WINS/DNS.

When we upgraded to 2.2.3a, speed increased dramatically with w2k clients opening files, especially excel with embedded VB macros. Apologies in advance to the list for sounding like a Micro$oft help desk employee, but you should upgrade. :) Mike> ---------- > From: Tony McArthur[SMTP:tmcarthur@optushome.com.au] > Sent: Wednesday, March 06, 2002 7:12 PM > To: samba@samba.org > Subject: [Samba] Win2000 - Very Slow opening files from Samba Share > > Hello, > > I hope you can be of some assistance. > > I am using Samba 2.2.0 on SCO Open Server 5.0.5. > I have a number of various clients on the Network eg Win 98 and Win 2000. > > My Unix Server is a PIII 1000, dual CPU computer with dual Raid 1 > (mirroring > disks) > > Samba is working well from the Win 98 Machines. > > However, from the Win 2000 machines when I try to open an Excel file from > one of the Shared Samba drives for example it takes about 2 minutes to > open. > The same file only takes a couple of seconds to open from the local C > drive. > > Are there some settings I need to set in the SMB.CONF file to cope with > the > mirroring. > > I hope someone out there can help. > > Tony McArthur > > > -- > To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the > instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba >

Take a look at your log files and see if you are getting any oplock_break messages. As I just explained in another message, I was having a similar problem with a Win2K client accessing MSOffice files. My solution was to set the 'veto oplock files' directive in smb.conf. This appears to only be effecting my Win2K clients accessing my Samba 2.2.3a shares. Setting this option did the trick for me.
