We installed Samba server on a Alphaserver 4000 and we are connecting with a Win NT client Our server name is "ALPHASERVER4000" our client name is "PC3" we arrived to test 10 and problem is still alive. We can see with the NT browser "ALPHASERVER4000" but if we double click on it a password is requested. We tried with Regedit with all this options. Run regedt32.exe and locate the hive key entry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\CurrentControlSet\Services\Rdr\Parameters\ Add the following value: EnablePlainTextPassword:REG_DWORD=1 Alternatively, use the NT4_PlainPassword.reg file in this directory (either by double clicking on it, or run regedt32.exe and select "Import Registry File" from the "Registry" Menu). What can we do more ????? Thanks to you for an help Fabrizio Campione from Sicily
Hi all, I have samba working on various UNIX boxes, RH Linux, Solaris, AIX and freeBSD. all have the exact same configuration files. Access to all of them is set to Server and usernames/passwords exist both locally and on the domain controller. Problem is that when trying to access the AIX box from another subnet on a NT client i keep getting the following error \\AIXbox is not accessible The credentials supplied conflict with an existing set of credentials. All the other samba boxes work fine from any subnet. It only seems to be the AIX box. Any ideas? thanks -aaz
I just recently downloaded Samba 2.0 and installed it. It seems to be running and working for the most part but I am having problems with passwords. First problem I had was I tried to use swat and I put in root and my root password and it denied the authorization. I then tried to connect with smbclient and it will not take any of my usernames/password pairs. It will only work with the guest account. I looked at the smbpasswd file and it was empty. I have tried changing/adding usernames/passwords to it with addtosmbpass and smbpasswd with no luck and I still can't access any of the shares with my usernames/passwords. I also tried from win95 and failed there too. Any suggestions? I am using Redhat 5.1 linux. Thanks Andy Worthington -------------- next part -------------- HTML attachment scrubbed and removed
Okay, be patient with me, I'm still new to Linux but I tried installing Samba and am able to reach other computers on my network from linux, but from my other computer using win98 I can see my linux computer under network neighborhood, but when i try and access it, it asks me for a password and i can't figure out what password it wants. I tried using root's, my regular user password, and even tried leaving it blank but nothing works. Also, is there a way to change the name of the computer, right now it's only showing up at the IP address. I have RedHat 5.2 installed and am trying to use Samba to let my Windows 98 machine access the Linux box. The Windows machine has the Linux box listed under the network neighborhood, but I can't login to the Linux machine. I have been trying to login as root. But everytimg windows says the password is invalid. The password is correct. This is what I get: invalid password and when trying to login from dos command I get: The password is invalid for \\FRED\ROOT then it gives me a password prompt, and when I type in the password it says: Error 86:The specified netowrk password is not correct. Try the correct password. I have already added the lines to the smb.conf file to allow for encrypted passwords, but that didn't change a thing. Has anyone had this problem before? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you. Galen
I'm having problems with the user password sync option. I have Samba 2.0.3 running on a Sun Solaris 2.6 server. Initially we weren't using the unix password sync option, but we are now starting to experiment with synchronising passwords over a domain, and this would seem to be one small step. Without user password sync changing user passwords using SWAT is fine. Having the option on produces the error: machine 127.0.0.1 rejected the password change: Error was : The specified password is invalid. Failed to change password for <user> Changing the user password from root in SWAT seems to change the password. The result is: SWAT thinks the password for samba is the same. The server thinks the unix password is the same. The pc login changes to the new password. The options I have on that I think are relevant are: Security = USER encrypt password = Yes update encrypted = No passwd program = /bin/passwd passwd chat = *old*password* %o\n *new*password* %n\n *new*password* %n\n *changed* passwd chat = No unix password sync = Yes I know the option should work, but it doesn't seem to get permissions to change the unix side, and screws up the Samba side. I just searched through the last couple of months in the archives and can't find a solution to the following: RH 6.0, Samba 2.07. With "encrypt passwords = Yes" Win2000 can see the server but can not access it. Win98 can see the server but can not access it as well. With "encrypt passwords = No" Win2000 no problems seeing and accessing shares. Win98 can not authenticate. Invalid password. I verified the unix passwords and accounts on the RH machine and applied the plain password.reg to both. I read the docs on confiuring and everthing tests fine - just having these password problems... # Samba config file created using SWAT # Date: 2001/02/21 23:20:28 # Global parameters [global] workgroup = ET netbios name = YODA server string = Samba 2.0.7 at %h log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m name resolve order = wins lmhosts host bcast socket options = SO_KEEPALIVE TCP_NODELAY SO_SNDBUF=8192 SO_RCVBUF=8192 os level = 65 dns proxy = No wins support = Yes [homes] comment = Home Directories writeable = Yes browseable = No [printers] comment = All Printers path = /var/spool/samba printable = Yes browseable = No Any ideas are greatly appreciated... Failed to change password for [ ] I can log in fine I can change user passwords with root fine I can share printers I can share folders I have two PCs: a server which dual boots Linux and Win2k server and a client which dual boots Win98SE and Win2k pro. Samba is the PDC and the client PC has been added to the domain. Any idea what the problem is?

The Client PC's are 1.5Ghz with 512MB memory and 10/100 nics, The server is a 2Ghz 1GB memory and a 10/100 nic. The problem I'm having is when the Client Work stations connect they get the Following Message "Your Password Expires today Would you like to update". For Technically inclined people just clicking no and going on with your life is fine but for the Avg. User this becomes bothersome is there any way to fix this problem? Thank you, Marc A.
