Hi everyone, After much work, I''d like to announce the newest Rails hosting platform: RailsAppHosting.com. It''s a completely Rails-centric web host and it''s designed to make your life easier. Basic features: * 100% lighttpd / fastcgi * Custom control panel built with Rails, for Rails. Allows you to take your application online/offline, switch environments, view logs, manage svn users and enable/disable external MySQL access. More features to come soon too! * SVN is standard, and configured by default so that whenever you commit changes to the repository your application''s web-root is automatically updated instantly. You can define unlimited SVN users for each application. * Each application receives its own IP address and has SSL running by default (using a generic development SSL certificate). We''re not accepting paying customers yet, however we are looking for people to participate in our beta program. In a nutshell, we''re offering free hosting for one Rails application throughout our beta phase until we launch. The launch date isn''t confirmed yet, but we''ll guarantee at least one month of no-cost access. After that it''s up to you whether you stay or leave. We primarily just want to work out whether there''s any problems that need fixing before our full-scale launch. If you''re working on a free, open-source Rails app we''re happy to set you up with a permanent free account for your project - just let us know what you''re working on. If you would like to participate, just go to http://www.railsapphosting.com , click ''Signup'' and create an account for yourself (no billing details are needed). Once that''s done, send us an email (support-iLQGymMgwYntzojHiQcNpEEOCMrvLtNR@public.gmane.org) and we''ll add one free application to your account which you can then create using the control panel. I hope this didn''t sound like too much of an advertisement - we''re quite excited and hope that we can help the Rails community in general by providing a hosting platform that has zero-configuration Rails support. Cheers, Ben Myles
If you''re still looking for people. I would be interested as participating as a beta tester. - Jim On Jul 23, 2005, at 3:37 PM, Ben Myles wrote:> Hi everyone, > > After much work, I''d like to announce the newest Rails hosting > platform: RailsAppHosting.com. Hi Jim, Sure thing, just create an account as per the announcement email. There''s room for quite a few more yet. Hey Ben, Not sure if you saw my recent posts on the SCGI server I''m writing, but I was wondering if I could pick your brains on what would have made/could make your lighttpd+fcgi setup easier? Or, what would you really want in a Rails hosting service that I could add to the SCGI server setup? What I''m looking to do is make it dead easy for hosting services like yours to host Rails apps using SCGI without the user needing to do a bunch of extra configs. Tried the service. Working pretty well. Already have several good manuals in the forum. Following one of them was very easy to install and run typo. Just one small wish: a possibility to create db user(s) different from the admin/control one. Every time when i changed the password for the control panel, i needed to correct also config/database.yml. Will be good to have independent db user(s) (maybe for every database). Hi, Thanks for the feedback! We''re actually working on a few new features for the CP which will be deployed on our new server we''re currently provisioning. One of them is the ability to define an unlimited number of DB users and the permissions each user should have. We''ll also be allowing SSH access. All current beta testers will be moved on to the new server - we''re going to use the existing one purely as a lighttpd load balancer. -- Ben Myles RailsAppHosting (www.railsapphosting.com) On 7/26/05, Stoyan Zhekov <stoyan-Re5JQEeQqe8AvxtiuMwx3w@public.gmane.org> wrote:> Tried the service. Are you currently using MySQL 5 ? -Larry On 7/26/05, Ben Myles <ben.myles-Re5JQEeQqe8AvxtiuMwx3w@public.gmane.org> wrote:> > Hi, > > Thanks for the feedback! > > We''re actually working on a few new features for the CP which will be > deployed on our new server we''re currently provisioning. We''re installing MySQL 5 on the new server we''re currently configuring. This will be online in about 6-12 hours and we''re migrating all accounts to it. Ben On 7/27/05, Larry Kelly <ldk2005-Re5JQEeQqe8AvxtiuMwx3w@public.gmane.org> wrote:> Are you currently using MySQL 5 ? > -Larry
Another Webhost that I have several accounts with prior to discovering rails is working with me to have rails supported on their server as well. They cannot run FCGI on their server becuase of the following reason: ------------------------------------------ Our system administrators performed the following upgrades: gems 0.8.11 rails 0.13.1 ruby 1.8.2 However, it is not possible to run FastCGI on our servers. We are using the Suexec mechanism, and our system administrators performed multiple tests. The results showed that FastCGI does not work well with Suexec and the FrontPage server extensions. That is why we do not support FastCGI on our servers. Thank you! Best Regards, Support ------------------------------------------ Do you know if SCGI could work around this issue? - Jim On Jul 25, 2005, at 5:56 PM, Zed A.
