Just a fun thought for the day. I think it''d be cool to organise a one day rails competition - in the spirit of the 24 hour dot com - where a couple of rails developers have one day to design, build and deploy a webapplication. I''m working on a project at the moment which has taken about a month so far - so it''d be fun to do a quick hack and put something up online. It could also be useful to show people how quickly stuff can be built with rails, and as a learning exercise for participants (and viewers if the code is released under a CC license). A wiki and communal weblog for the 24 hour period would get a real feeling of community between competitors. Is there anyone who would be interested in competing? Regards, Ben

That''s the hard bit ;) Maybe people could put up things they''d really like to see and we could pick up on ones that are possible? Oh, and as long as it was on a weekend, Saturday US time so I can do it on Sunday in New Zealand, otherwise I end up with problems relating to work on Monday. -- Phillip Hutchings http://www.sitharus.com/ sitharus-Re5JQEeQqe8AvxtiuMwx3w@public.gmane.org / sitharus-QrR4M9swfipWk0Htik3J/w@public.gmane.org
> Is there anyone who would be interested in competing?Sounds fun, but I don''t really have a spare day to dedicate to Rails. My weekdays are spent working and my weekends are spent trying to be a good father :) Too bad I can''t take off work or something, I have an app in mind already. -- rick http://techno-weenie.net
What about designing something that could be pulled into one of the Ruby sites or something which could be generally useful? A few ideas: * A Ruby Gems Repository Manager * The Ruby Application Archive -- reimplement with voting and other enhancements * A Rails/MySQL Wiki * A Ruby Conference/Event Registration System * A CVS View * An E-mail Subscription Management System * Some sort of Ruby Shopping Cart -- John Long http://wiseheartdesign.com Ben Nolan wrote:> Just a fun thought for the day. Do we need a wiki/mailing list/irc channel/anything to organise this off the main Rails list? I''ve got a server with plenty of bandwidth to spare. -- Phillip Hutchings http://www.sitharus.com/ sitharus-Re5JQEeQqe8AvxtiuMwx3w@public.gmane.org / sitharus-QrR4M9swfipWk0Htik3J/w@public.gmane.org
Another would be to do the Northwinds application, as comes with Access. Hey all, I got an email from Todd Gehman at the Robot Co-Op recommending we move this discussion onto 43things. I agree - here''s the "official" goal and rules of the 24 Hours on Rails competition. http://www.43things.com/entries/view/35589 NB - the rules are completely up for discussion and modification. Regards, Ben
It''s a cheezoid, simple database that comes with Access, and is referenced in the Access manuals. In addition to a non-trivial (i.e., more than two or three joined tables) database schema, it has the single entity and parent-child entry forms and various flavors of reports built in it as well. It''s geared more toward an integrated "how-to" container referenced in the help files and docs. So the useful Rails parts to see done would, of course, be the data entry formsand reports. The database schema isn''t that interesting, at least, not like the Java Petshop database schema. It''s also used for some of the ASP.Net tutorials, upgraded for SQL Server, etc. I mentioned it because I think it would be a good, accessible benchmark that, as long as one is using Windows and Access, one can compare-and-contrast easily enough... If anyone wants the database schema, I''ll dig up my MySQL create script when I get home tonite. Of course, I''m goofing around with trying to do my own version of it too. -Corey On Thu, 24 Mar 2005 10:06:00 +1200, Phillip Hutchings <sitharus-Re5JQEeQqe8AvxtiuMwx3w@public.gmane.org> wrote:> On Wed, 23 Mar 2005 14:03:11 -0800, Corey Lawson > <corey.ssf.lawson-Re5JQEeQqe8AvxtiuMwx3w@public.gmane.org> wrote: > > Another would be to do the Northwinds application, as comes with Access. > > Despite the fact that I have a degree that claims I can do stuff with > Access and MSSQL, I still don''t know what Northwinds is ;) Should I > set up a Wiki for this discussion?
