I''m getting started with Rails and would enjoy meeting anyone working with Rails in my area. It would be helpful to discuss design approaches, compare notes, solve problems, etc. Interested? Best, Dave Ringoen
Not exactly Boulder, but in Denver. jim Dave Ringoen wrote:> I''m getting started with Rails and would enjoy meeting anyone working with > Rails in my area. Great, Jim! Looks like this is a pretty active mailing list--that was my first message to it, and your answer came within minutes! I''m investigating RoR for a reservation system for my company, which has tons of database tables and a fair degree of business logic complexity, as well as UI complexity. I''d love to have a prototype working to convince my boss of this approach (we started development in PHP, but it''s feeling like it takes lots of code to get things working), so I''m stumbling through trying to get ActiveRecord working with our database schema, etc. What are you doing with RoR? I am Littleton. Rails rocks. I have been doing numerous projects already with RoR. -Dale On Tue, 08 Feb 2005 14:30:05 -0700, Dave Ringoen <email-aMBdsrFCgW+KfZpkr/XK+Q@public.gmane.org> wrote:> I''m getting started with Rails and would enjoy meeting anyone working with > Rails in my area. Right now, mostly a timetracking application for managing time for clients/tasks. But we have some other things planned for the future. I used to be a PHP developer, since 1998. And I would never go back now that I am using Rails. It''s just too hard to do the simple stuff. One, thing I would reccommend is not to try and force the db structure onto the new rails app. Start with a fresh approach that makes sense from the MVC perspective. PHP even with using OOP, Smarty, etc doesn''t do a good job of making this easy. Maybe that''s not exactly true, you just have to write a bunch of code to get the functionality that''s built into Rails. If you start from scratch you can manuever the old code into the new database with some fancy SQL. I tried porting something from PHP and it just didn''t go that good. It was easier just to start over. jim Dave Ringoen wrote:> Great, Jim! > > Looks like this is a pretty active mailing list--that was my first message > to it, and your answer came within minutes! > > I''m investigating RoR for a reservation system for my company, which has > tons of database tables and a fair degree of business logic complexity, as > well as UI complexity. I''m also in the Denver area and would love to get together with others interested in Ruby and Rails. Dave, I''m in Boulder. I''ve got a couple of buddies here too who have been fooling around with rails, although I don''t think they read the list. -Doug -----Original Message----- From: rails-bounces-1W37MKcQCpIf0INCOvqR/iCwEArCW2h5@public.gmane.org [mailto:rails-bounces-1W37MKcQCpIf0INCOvqR/iCwEArCW2h5@public.gmane.org] On Behalf Of Dave Ringoen Sent: Tuesday, February 08, 2005 2:30 PM To: rails-1W37MKcQCpIf0INCOvqR/iCwEArCW2h5@public.gmane.org Subject: [Rails] Anyone using Rails in Boulder, Colorado? I''m in Frederick. The RubyGarden wiki shows a UG in boulder, but the last meeting appears to have been in 2002. A revival would be great. http://www.rubygarden.org/ruby?ColoradoRubyEnthusiasts Lee Marlow wrote:> I''m also in the Denver area and would love to get together with others interested in Ruby and Rails. Ah, thanks, I had forgotten that CORE entry was still up there. I used to run that email list and the email list is pretty much gone, but most of us that were on it are still around. We are generally at Cafe Sole in south Boulder for the Boulder chapter of the HackingSociety meetings (http://www.hackingsociety.org/). Feel free to come join us. There are a fair number of us there that have a particular interest in Ruby. Just come on by and look for folks with laptops :-) If a revival of Boulder based Ruby group is in the works, I''m in again. Of if you want to just start tonight, I''ll be at Sole (http://www.caffesole.com/south_boulder.html) around 7ish. enjoy, -jeremy On Tue, Feb 08, 2005 at 04:48:44PM -0700, Kevin Williams wrote:> I''m in Frederick. > > The RubyGarden wiki shows a UG in boulder, but the last meeting appears > to have been in 2002.
