Hello, I am trying to update the mgcv package on my Linux box and I keep
getting an "Out of memory!" error. Does anyone know of a fix for
this?

Can you try to upgrade to a recent version of R please? Yours is at least one year old and has still the old help system. It may be the case that the new mgcv is not compatible with the old help system.
