For the loadings, please use the loadings() accessor function. It is
"loadings" print method that is giving you the "proportion
var", not
factanal(). So to use a reproducible example

> fit <- factanal(m1, factors = 3)
> (ld <- loadings(fit))

that. (It
calculates the summary table, not extracts the values.)
