Read the manual, `Writing R Extensions' in this case:
The ``comment'' and ``control'' characters @samp{%} and @samp{\}
@emph{always} need to be escaped. Inside the verbatim-like commands
(@code{\code} and @code{\examples}), no other characters are special
so it's \%\% you need to write.
