Since I've been using R on my FreeBSD boxes (from version 2.8 to 4.5),
I've never seen anything different than what you're seeing when I invoke
R at a simple xterm. Of course, once I invoke a command that requires a
X11() device (e.g., plot()) then a graphical window shows up. I use R
inside an Emacs ESS buffer so I've never thought much about the
non-graphical aspects of R on plain xterm. Is this different on Linux? I
know the MS Windows version looks quite different.
