[R] "Digest" version of R-help and R-devel mailing lists
A few of you have expressed the desire for a "digest" subscription to the R-help and/or R-devel mailing lists. {This may be especially useful if you leave for vacation etc}. These ``digest lists'' have now been put into place, i.e., if you don't want to get as much e-mail from R-help or R-devel as currently, but still would want to be in touch, you could now consider changing your subscription, from, e.g., R-help to R-help-digest. Note that a "digest" in this sense is no condensation; it's just one e-mail with all messages instead of single message e-mails. The one I (as currently only subscribe to R-help-digest) got this morning started as>> R-help Digest Monday, September 20 1999 Volume 01 : Number 002 >> >> >> >> In this issue: >> >> Re: [R] janka data >> Re: [R] using C++ with R? >> [R] janka data >> Re: [R] using C++ with R? >> [R] error in loading shared libraries >> Re: [R] error in loading shared libraries >> >> See the end of the digest for information about r-help-digest> (and then these 6 messages concatenated)Further note that the digest follows "official" standard RFC 934, and can be dealt with `` almost any digest-digester that comes along '' (eg. in Emacs RMAIL, I can do M-x undigestify-rmail-message which would split the above digest into 1+6 single messages) Mail to R-help-digest is the same as mail to R-help (such that replying to R-help-digest will reply to where appropriate). I am proposing (and have currently activated) to have digestifications 3 times a week, on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (at MET 04 = UTC 04+{1|2}). Another possibility would be daily digests. I think we should keep it as it is now for a while and have the digest subscribers send me mail (not to the list which is identical to R-help) if a different schedule is desired [e.g. S-news-digest is daily]. Finally, how do you change your subscription from R-help to R-help-digest? On Unix {with working e-mail}, it's as simple as echo subscribe r-help-digest | mail majordomo at stat.math.ethz.ch echo unsubscribe r-help | mail majordomo at stat.math.ethz.ch Of course, I'm not encouraging anyone to do this, since "immediate" discussions are more helpful to anyone looking for help on R-help. On the other hand, you might be interested in R's development, but not want to get as many messages as you get now. I think this is particularly true for R-devel which gets all bug reports. You may consider subscribing to R-devel-digest if you have shied away from subscribing to R-devel till now. BTW, this is *not* sent to R-devel since I assume any R-develers to be subscribed to R-help anyway... okay?
