Hi, Quick question to all the electronics gurus out there.. I unpacked my second GS phone yesterday (had it for about a month!) and set it up.. This morning the power supply is dead.. I have looked for a new one online (In the UK using Maplin let me know if you know a better place.) becasue it would probbaly take too long to get one sent from China or the US and I need to get that station operational again.. There seem to be many choices for power supplies.. Looking on the bottom of the broken one it is a 5VDC 400mA output.. When I looked online for a new one the choices are for regulated, unregulated and switch mode power supplies with the regulated and switch mode ones being VERY much more expensive than the unregulated ones.. Which kind would do the job?? Also most of the variable output adapters are 4.5v or 6v, Not the required 5v.. Any help would be appreciated.. Thanks.. -- ______________________________________________ http://www.linuxmail.org/ Now with e-mail forwarding for only US$5.95/yr Powered by Outblaze
When I was looking for a psu the only site I found for 5V ( and a decent price) was CPC, but I cannot remember the www address robb Quoting "WipeOut ." <wipeout@linuxmail.org>:> Hi, > > Quick question to all the electronics gurus out there.. > > I unpacked my second GS phone yesterday (had it for about a month!) and set > it up.. We do the replacement adapters for ?12+VAT if interested. You'll still need the US-to-UK adapter though. Contact me offline if you need one. You could go to cpc as was suggested. www.cpc.co.uk Tan telappliant.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "WipeOut ." <wipeout@linuxmail.org> To: <asterisk-users@lists.digium.com> Sent: Tuesday, August 12, 2003 1:09 PM Subject: [Asterisk-Users] OT: Grandstream power supplies.. [Asterisk-Users] OT: Grandstream power supplies..
Generally speaking, something like this would require a regulated power supply, as the internal components are most likely needing 5VDC, instead of the phone taking over 5V and regulating the power itself (which drops the voltage in the process, hence taking over 5V...). I'm guessing that you will require at least a regulated supply. You don't necessarily need a switch mode power supply. Their benefits, as I understand them, only come into play for large power applications where efficiency and power factor come into play. The main benefits of switch mode for you would be, most likely, a smaller footprint and a slightly better power efficieny (somewhere on the order of 1 Watt). When you talk of variable adapters that are either 4.5V or 6V, does that mean that they range from 0-4.5V and 0-6V (as in variable)? If so, you could use a 6V variable set for 5V output. Looking at Maplin's website, your best shot might be the '15W SMPS AC/DC Adaptors', Order Code PJ85G - 5VDC output at 2.5A. You're right, Maplin is expensive. The only thing I would stress is that if your phone is malfunctioning and drawing more current than the previous 400mA adapter could source (hence the failure of the previous adaptor), this larger current adaptor would allow the phone to draw even _more_ current, probably releasing some of the magic smoke inside the electronics (which is what makes ICs work, right? :) -Brenton ----- Original Message ----- From: "WipeOut ." <wipeout@linuxmail.org> To: <asterisk-users@lists.digium.com> Sent: Tuesday, August 12, 2003 7:09 AM Subject: [Asterisk-Users] OT: Grandstream power supplies..> Hi, > > Quick question to all the electronics gurus out there.. > > I unpacked my second GS phone yesterday (had it for about a month!) andset it up.. I have actually seen the magic smoke and survived. I was at a client with problems with a 3Com 4 port hub and had a 4 port NoName switch with me. So I removed the 3Com (18v), connected the switch (9v) and plugged in the power supply, from the other side of the office I smelt something strange. The surprising thing is that that switch is still functioning in my network a year later even though it sings a bit. -- Dave Cotton <dcotton@linuxautrement.com>
anything that supplies a reasonably straight 5v should work .. do not send *more* than that into the phone which is what most unregulated supplies will do .. the supply which comes with the grandstream seems to be a nice switchmode one. cheers Dave ----- Original Message ----- From: "WipeOut ." <wipeout@linuxmail.org> To: <asterisk-users@lists.digium.com> Sent: Tuesday, August 12, 2003 2:09 PM Subject: [Asterisk-Users] OT: Grandstream power supplies..> Hi, > > Quick question to all the electronics gurus out there.. > > I unpacked my second GS phone yesterday (had it for about a month!) andset it up.. Thanks for the help guys.. I got a 5V 1A regulated supply from CPC for ?11.33 Incl VAT and the 3.99 handling charge.. Lets hope it does the job..Should arrive tomorrow.. Still waiting to hear from GS support to see what their policy on failures is.. Later.. -- ______________________________________________ http://www.linuxmail.org/ Now with e-mail forwarding for only US$5.95/yr Powered by Outblaze
