Hi all, I am a newbie to Ruby, and I thought I''d try Ruby on Rails. I followed the instructions given here: http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/onlamp/2005/01/20/rails.html?page=1 Unfortunately, I got stuck at this step: gem install rails --remote. When I type this command, this is all I see: Attempting local installation of ''rails'' Local gem file not found: rails*.gem Attempting remote installation of ''rails'' Updating Gem source index for: http://gems.rubyforge.org The installer sat at that stage for about an hour, at which point I killed it. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this ? -- ---------------------[ Ciphire Signature ]---------------------- From: bugmaster-ihVZJaRskl1bRRN4PJnoQQ@public.gmane.org signed email body (503 characters) Date: on 20 March 2005 at 13:38:41 UTC To: rails-1W37MKcQCpIf0INCOvqR/iCwEArCW2h5@public.gmane.org ---------------------------------------------------------------- : Ciphire has secured this email against identity theft. : Free download at www.ciphire.com. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this ?Try to uninstall all older rails related gems. This did it for me when I had this problem a couple of weeks ago. Also update rubygems. Sascha

Also update rubygems.I can''t uninstall all other rails related gems, because I don''t have any, because I can''t get rails running to begin with. I did update rubygems though (after reinstalling Ruby)... no effect. -- ---------------------[ Ciphire Signature ]---------------------- From: bugmaster-ihVZJaRskl1bRRN4PJnoQQ@public.gmane.org signed email body (288 characters) Date: on 20 March 2005 at 15:04:05 UTC To: rails-1W37MKcQCpIf0INCOvqR/iCwEArCW2h5@public.gmane.org ---------------------------------------------------------------- : Ciphire has secured this email against identity theft. : Free download at www.ciphire.com. I''d like to try Rails, but if I can''t even get it installed, I am starting to doubt whether it''s worth the effort... -- ---------------------[ Ciphire Signature ]---------------------- From: bugmaster-ihVZJaRskl1bRRN4PJnoQQ@public.gmane.org signed email body (235 characters) Date: on 20 March 2005 at 20:49:39 UTC To: rails-1W37MKcQCpIf0INCOvqR/iCwEArCW2h5@public.gmane.org ---------------------------------------------------------------- : Ciphire has secured this email against identity theft. : Free download at www.ciphire.com. Let me tell you this. I had a extremely hard time getting Rails to work reliably on Windows, too. I usually got it working. But there would always be some dealbreaker problem. I used Windows, Cygwin and tried every trick I could come up with. But always some little thing broke. This took about 2 weeks out of my life ;) Then I tried Colinux (www.colinux.org) and installed Debian Sarge on it. And I have come to love it. There is nothing like having a complete Linux subsystem running as a service under Windows XP. Of course, once you are on a Linux system everything gets easier. That is, of course, if you know your way around Linux. If you don''t than this is really bad advice and I apologize for giving it ;) It took me maybe one day to set everything up. Now I am running said Debian Sarge with lighttpd/fastcgi that can do Ruby/Rails, PHP4, PHP5 all under one server process. It never crashes. It is plenty fast for development (refreshing is instant) and generally makes me feel warm and fuzzy :) I installed and configured Samba to share my Rails directory (/home/simplepages) to letter S: and edit the files with a native Gvim for Windows. I usually log in via ssh but I can also start a vncserver and use Gnome under X. Essentially I have the best of both worlds. Since I usually deploy on Linux deployment gets even easier. So before you give up in vain consider this approach. If you can steer a linux box but don''t want to or cannot give up your Windows box (like me) as a primary dev machine, than by all means, try this. Good luck. Sascha
