Section 6.8 of the writing R extensions manual mentions this:
6.8 Optimization
The C code underlying optim can be accessed directly. The user needs
to supply a function to
compute the function to be minimized, of the type
typedef double optimfn(int n, double *par, void *ex);
And also vmmin() and quite a few others optimization routines
whose interfaces are in: ‘R_ext/Applic.h’
