A while back Gabor Grothendieck suggested that I try http://news.gmane.org/gmane.comp.lang.r.general. This was after I asked how to easily reply to posts on the listserve. Ideally I would like the functionality that I find in Microsoft Outlook Express newsreader for usenet groups or what I find in Google Groups. I started using gmane about 3 weeks ago. I find it fantastic for searching and for following threads but when I tried the "followup" function it dutifully gave me the message "You've now posted to gmane.comp.lang.r.general." However, I was expecting my response to go to R-help at stat.math.ethz.ch. So later I used gmane to see if my response had somehow got to where I intended it. Alas, I never found it. So how do you reply to someone's posting such that the reply lands up in the original thread. I subscribe to the list with a daily single e-mail. I guess if I got every message in real-time it would be easier since then you simply reply to the e-mail from within one's email inbox. The downside is that I would have lots of distractions all the time. Now, I prefer to do the reading in the great message reader that keeps my mail-inbox clean: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.comp.lang.r.general If you use the Followup button in gmane, the message will correctly land in the right box. I got it to work I noticed that gMane had the capability of being read by a NTTP reader. Within Microsof Outlook Newsreader one can create another "account". Under properties I made the server "news.gmane.org" and everything else worked well thereafter. True proof of how well it works will be if this message lands up on the mailing list. Contact me you cannot get it to work and I will step you through gTalk fjbuch at gmail.com or I am on MSN messenger as well. Details if you need it. The GMane webbased reader works but I am more familiar with the Outlook express newsreader. -- Farrel Buchinsky, MD Pediatric Otolaryngologist Allegheny General Hospital Pittsburgh, PA

I will be the first to confess that I do not really have a jot of a clue how Usenet relates to gmane and mailing lists, OR NOT. Needles to say let me ask a questions so loaded with a naivet? that only I would ask it. "Why can I not get R-help at stat.math.ethz.ch mailing list on Google Groups?" And whatever the answer is to that question, how does one negate it? I would love to be able to get the mailing list on Google Groups or its mirror gmane.comp.lang.r.general. -- Farrel Buchinsky, MD Pediatric Otolaryngologist Allegheny General Hospital Pittsburgh, PA
