It may be that the package.tar.gz is corrupted, for example by ascii ftp
between Windows and Unix. Did you get any messages from tar and/or gzip? You
could try to unzip and untar it and see if it's OK.
Is gzip on your path? It's not distributed with Solaris so maybe it's in
an
unusual location on your system.

Subject: [R] installing gzip files
I'm trying to install an R package that arrived in a
package.tar.gz file.
I use:
R INSTALL -l /home/adele/packagedir package.tar.gz
and I get:
ERROR: cannot extract package from package.tar.gz
The author of the package assures me that the same
command works for his version of solaris and R.
He has solaris 5.7 and R 1.4.1, while I have
solaris 5.8 and R 1.4.1.
Does anyone know what's wrong and how to fix it?
Thanks,
Adele Cutler
