When would it be necessary to scrub a ZFS filesystem? We have many "rpool", "datapool", and a NAS 7130, would you consider to schedule monthly scrubs at off-peak hours or is it really necessary? I scrub once a week. I think the general rule is: once a week for consumer grade drives once a month for enterprise grade drives. The resulting resilver will read all the data in the datasets in order to reconstruct the new disk, some of which might not have been read for ages (or since the last scrub), and that''s not the ideal time to discover your existing copy of some blocks went bad some time back. Better to discover this before you reduce the pool redundancy/resilience, whilst it''s still fixable. -- Andrew
In addition to backups on tape, I like to backup my ZFS to removable hard disk. (Created a ZFS filesystem on removable disk, and "zfs send | zfs receive" onto the removable disk). But since a single hard disk is so prone to failure, I like to scrub my external disk regularly, just to verify the drive has not begun failing.
