At <http://www.xen.org/download/> there are two downloads for v.3.4.1 and only a very brief description of each: Xen 3.4.1 (hypervisor and tools) official source distribution and Linux 2.6.18 with Xen 3.4.x support source tarball What''s the difference? The implication is that the first is *not* Linux. Which Linux (of the nearly innumerable distros) is the second? You need to compile everything. Not necessarily, if you simply want a working setup, as you could use Xen 3.x with RHEL''s bundled kernel-xen.>> A lot of Xenites use Centos, but it''s not required. > > Haven''t tried CentOS yet, but have heard good about it. Corroboration, > anyone? If you use RHEL/Centos you can use Gitco''s Xen packages http://www.gitco.de/repo/ This is basically the compiled version of Xen hypervisor and tools. You still use RHEL''s kernel-xen. This is the easiest way for RHEL/Centos users to use Xen 3.4.1, and should work great for normal setups. Some newer features (like scsi passthrough) might not work in this configuration though, due to lack of kernel support. -- Fajar _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

It does to replace the kernel in addition to adding another line to grub (or other boot loader). You need a xen kernel to run xen.. _____ From: xen-users-bounces@lists.xensource.com [mailto:xen-users-bounces@lists.xensource.com] On Behalf Of Bruce Edge Sent: Thursday, August 27, 2009 10:12 AM To: gebser@mousecar.com; Xen users mailing list Subject: Re: [Xen-users] Two v.3.4.1 downloads On Thu, Aug 27, 2009 at 3:46 AM, ken<gebser@mousecar.com> wrote:> > On 08/26/2009 10:32 AM Bruce Edge wrote: >> On Wed, Aug 26, 2009 at 6:58 AM, ken<gebser@mousecar.com> wrote: >>> At <http://www.xen.org/download/> there are two downloads for v.3.4.1 >>> and only a very brief description of each: >>> >>> Xen 3.4.1 (hypervisor and tools) official source distribution >> >> This is the xen tools source. >> >>> and >>> >>> Linux 2.6.18 with Xen 3.4.x support source tarball >> >> This is the patched linux kernel. >> >>> What''s the difference?
