Set MAKEFLAGS accordingly, possibly by editing R's Makeconf. This is
documented in the 'R Extensions' manual.

Yes, using 'M-x gdb' to launcg the gdb frontend. I also use ddd on
Linux.
Using the debugger is also described in the 'R Extensions' manual.
