oh, my fault, sorry for the invalid report

previous machines had it compiled into the kernel

but still, i would expect the iptables write an error message when using
connection tracking in $proto table and nf_conntrack_$proto is not loaded

Starting with 2.6.17-rc it will report an error if you use the state match and
it can't load the module.
