Samba Guru's: I need whatever help you all can provide. I'm at my wits end here with this problem, I've checked forums and the Samba docs and can't find anything. Sorry if this email is long and drawn out. We just put in a new Solaris 9 server running Samba 3.0.11 to replace a Solaris 8 server running Samba 2.0.7. All the client desktops are running Windows 2000 joined to a Domain (there are a handful of XP machines). Within the last 6 months or so associates have been experiencing slowness printing from Office applications like Word or Excel (it's sporadic too). It takes an extremely long time to go into the printing preferences or switch between printers when wanting to print to a different printer then the default (sometimes 2 min). There have also been SSL issues within Oracle Forms while trying to print, but that may or may not be related. This server running Samba is and always will be just a Print Server, nothing else. We're running the following software on the backend for printer management: JetDirect Printer Installer for UNIX Version E.10.34. There are no error messages in /var/adm/messages for the server, all signs on the server show it's just humming away. Has anyone seen this? Am I missing something simple? Are there any changes you would suggest making to improve printing performance and times? Is there anything I'm leaving out that you might need to see or know? Tim Kazsuk wrote about slow printing from a Solaris server with Samba 3.0.11. I, too, run Samba on a Solaris 8 server, and when I receive Office XP jobs, they can take f-o-r-e-v-e-r to print through my spooler software (Xi-Text). It seems only to be especially large jobs (more than a few thousand pages) that are this slow. I run from a sunfreeware.com package. Did you compile your own? In my case, I fear that the lpusy performance is due mostly to shared memory files on a mirrored disk; have you examined the underlying disks & networking? You know, leave no stone unturned and all that. :7) -wde -- Will Enestvedt UNIX System Administrator Johnson & Wales University -- Providence, RI
Sounds similar, but in our case, it just takes forever to start printing and then once it does print, it comes out as normal. It may be an issue only with Windows 2000 machines, I'm using an XP machine and I don't seem to have any problems, printing is pretty fast. In our case, the jobs being sent to the printers are fairly small across the board, with little or no graphics. The biggest problem is the time it takes Office to open up with a Samba printer set as default on the PC. If a fake local printer is installed and set as default, Office opens up quickly, but when the end user has to print, going in to select the printer can take some time to select on and then print to it. This is becoming a big problem. I did compile the version I'm using, and for the most part took the defaults on the options. I've looked at the underlying disks (iostat is showing no problems), but not yet at the network settings on the server. We're running Gigabit from the server to the switch, all desktops are 100 Full Duplex. Our current settings are auto-auto on the Cisco switch side and auto-auto on the desktop side for Speed-Duplex. Leaving them as auto-auto or locking them down to 100 Full Duplex does not seem to make a difference.
Tim, Look into Push Bit Acknowledgement. On OpenBSD 3.x, I had to edit /etc/sysctl.conf and add "net.inet.tcp.ackonpush=1" to correct my sloooow printing. See MS KB816627 for slow printing on Win2k. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=816627 WinXP treats the Push Bit differently... Hope this helps, Jim> -----Original Message----- > From: Kazsuk, Tim [mailto:Tim_Kazsuk@homedepot.com] > Sent: Thursday, June 16, 2005 5:00 PM > To: samba@lists.samba.org > Subject: [Samba] Serious Slowness Issues with Printing > > > Samba Guru's: > > I need whatever help you all can provide. After some time looking into this problem, I was able to track the slowness problem down to the smbpasswd file or what seems to be a problem with the smbpasswd file and having the "security" option set to "SHARE". When we upgraded to 3.0.11, I moved over the previous smbpasswd file from 2.0.7, which has all the entries for the 3,192 associates we have. During the slowness I tried resetting some of the entries for those associates having the worst problem (smbpasswd <username> <passwd>), this did not work. I tried moving the entries for those associates to the top of the smbpasswd file, this did not work. It wasn't until I removed the smbpasswd file that I saw a difference. I then went in and removed the entry "smb passwd file=" via SWAT and things dramatically sped up with access times on the Windows clients. Can anyone shed some light on why this may be? Is this the way it's suppose to behave? Are the others having issues with printing slowness setup with the "security" option set to "SHARE" and a smbpasswd file specified? This is the first step you need to take in debugging a problem like this. The Samba server submits the job to the backend once it receives the EndJob RPC call. Jeremy.
