[Samba] Trying to debug a WinXP - Win2000 ADSproblem..HELP!
Now I could be way of base here, but I run 2 samba web servers with approx 8 people working with them. So my exp is limited. When I got here the boxes were set up with server level security and I had tons of problems with them. When I reformatted the units, I actually joined the samba boxes to the domain and set the security to "domain" I found these steps in an old version of Linux-Mag, if you need a link to that article, or something similar let me know and I will try to find it. Right now I _believe_ that with server security, you are telling the samba server to authenticate locally, where as domain tells the samba server to check the requestors credentials against a pdc/bdc. Server accepts request, responds to samba server, which in turn copies this acknowledgement to client and marks the client as authenticated. domain is much more of a relationship between the servers i.e. the samba server has an account on the PDC and authorises before passing info back and forth.>ThanksHope this helps you understand more. One thing I did notice.. [Samba] Trying to debug a WinXP - Win2000 ADSproblem..HELP!
I added the samba machine to the NT domain and changed the security type to domain per the DOMIAIN* documents. The net rpc join worked fine. I still have the same problem though.. I can map and unmap all day long but this other computer can't.. It takes several reboots before the machine will automatically map the drive. [Samba] Trying to debug a WinXP - Win2000 ADSproblem..HELP!
Well glad to hear that you did it that way. But now it becomes tougher, because we are pretty certain the connectivety is good between the xp box and the linux box, but we are getting different results. I assume you're using the same user on both boxes to eliminate that variable? How about the machine names? Do they follow standard format? Like under 15 (or is it 16?) characters, only "-"'s, not "_"'s Do you runs WINS? Netbios? (I'm pretty sure you are running Active directory DNS) -----Original Message----- From: Ladner, Eric (Eric.Ladner) [mailto:Eric.Ladner@ChevronTexaco.com] Sent: Wednesday, July 31, 2002 1:26 PM To: Dan Vande More; samba@lists.samba.org Subject: RE: [Samba] Trying to debug a WinXP - Win2000 ADSproblem..HELP! Any thoughts on the null conn->connectpath when connecting? HELP! Sorry for the log log file dump, but while looking at some problems mapping drives, I've run across some stuff. Below is a chunk of my log when I successfully map a network drive from a WinXP client to a Samba 3.0-alpha18 server. The thing that bothers me is that it looks like my DOMAIN\USERNAME combination isn't being honored and I'm getting in based on a check to the locally mapped user (I have a username map in place). The troubling things are the lines saying basically that CT\CLAD was rejected. The really troubling thing is that I have another user on site that has almost the exact same log and he can't map the drive, but I can every time. We're running the exact same type of client (installed from the same image even). Does this provide any insight into my problem? I'll be more than happy to supply more info! [Samba] Trying to debug a WinXP - Win2000 ADSproblem..HELP!
Here's another interesting thing I saw in the logs.. [2002/08/01 07:14:03, 3] smbd/sec_ctx.c:set_sec_ctx(288) setting sec ctx (0, 0) - sec_ctx_stack_ndx = 1 [2002/08/01 07:14:03, 5] passdb/pdb_smbpasswd.c:getsmbfilepwent(503) getsmbfilepwent: end of file reached. [2002/08/01 07:14:03, 7] passdb/pdb_smbpasswd.c:endsmbfilepwent(277) endsmbfilepwent_internal: closed password file. [2002/08/01 07:14:03, 5] lib/username.c:Get_Pwnam(309) Finding user rsc [2002/08/01 07:14:03, 5] lib/username.c:Get_Pwnam_internals(223) Trying _Get_Pwnam(), username as lowercase is rsc [2002/08/01 07:14:03, 5] lib/username.c:Get_Pwnam_internals(251) Get_Pwnam_internals did find user [rsc]! I wrote a test program that does basically the same thing that Get_Pwnam_internals does (eventually it calls getpwnam) for that user and it works flawlessly. Any idea on why Get_Pwnam_internals is not returning somebody that has a valid entry in /etc/passwd? Remember this is the user name that users are getting mapped to via the username map. [Samba] Trying to debug a WinXP - Win2000 ADSproblem..HELP!
I found a perl script a while back that probes a machine and gets all of the shares (even hidden) that the machine has. You may want to put this on your funky machine and run it, it might give you some insight into problems, or give you more symptoms to diagnose. It requires perl (activestate perl for win32, http://www.activestate.com) and the Win32::Lanman package. its called dumpshares.pl, I'm sure it would be easy to find on the net, but if you cannot find it I have it too. I've checked it myself. rsc is a valid account on the machine he's trying to connect to (entry in /etc/passwd, decent permissions on home directory and all parent directories, etc.) The strange thing is sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. If it doesn't connect, if he reboots enough times, eventually it will connect. Here's some more I dug up (snippets from the logs -- I highlited the differences with ** at the beginning of the line): If he does connect, the log looks like this: [2002/08/05 06:08:35, 3] smbd/password.c:register_vuid(300) uid 234 registered to name rsc [2002/08/05 06:08:35, 7] smbd/password.c:register_vuid(313) User [rsc], unix_homedir [/home/www/rsc] [2002/08/05 06:08:35, 7] smbd/password.c:register_vuid(314) vuser->guest is false [2002/08/05 06:08:35, 7] smbd/password.c:register_vuid(315) [2002/08/05 06:08:35, 7] param/loadparm.c:lp_servicenumber(3666) ** lp_servicenumber: couldn't find rsc ** lp_servicenumber('rsc') is -1 [2002/08/05 06:08:35, 7] param/loadparm.c:lp_servicenumber(3666) ** lp_servicenumber: couldn't find rsc [2002/08/05 06:08:35, 3] param/loadparm.c:lp_add_home(1929) ** adding home's share [rsc] for user rsc at /home/www/rsc . . . Maybe he's using Microsoft Family Logon rather than logging onto the domain?>We are both mapped to users in the users map file - I'm mapped >to planning, he's mapped to rsc..is rsc a valid account?>I'm getting close folks, I just need a little help!HTH>Eric-------------- Martyn Ranyard I am not a member of the samba team, and anything that I say may not be as accurate as a response from one of the team.
