I hope this isn't too confusing, but I'm confused so...
We have four boxes on our network (at least that I'm primarily concerned
with). A Samba v2.2.5 PDC (linuxts1), one windows 98 workstation
(kmorris), and two Samba workstations (jvan v2.2.3a & mrambo v.2.2.2).
We're having browse problems on the network. The server is set up to be
a domain & local master, the wins server on the network, and has an os
level of 64. Yet I have seen log messages on my workstation saying that
its the local master - it has an OS level of 33. All of the machines
have an identical workgroup name in smb.conf.
1) How can I tell what machine is really the Domain master and Local
master on a network?
smbclient -L [machine name] comes back with a response that includes the
workgroup at the bottom as well as "Master" and it's own name.
Does not
"Master" in this context mean either domain or local master and should
it not be our PDC?
2) Do Linux workstations do anything with the wins server address that
is present (at least in our configuration) when an IP address is leased
via dhcp or do I still to manually declare a wins server in the smb.conf
file on a Linux workstation?
Like I said, I'm confused...
