Dear Samba team: I just download SAMBA 2.0.7 from http://samba.gorski.net/samba/ftp/Binary_Packages/redhat/ and I have already installed SAMBA 2.0.6 which come with my red head linux 6.2 CD. But the 2.0.7 SAMBA is conflict with SAMBA 2.0.6. and it will not allow me to install the latest version of SAMBA. It gives me error messages while I am trying to install samba2.0.7 "Conflicts with file from package samba-common-2.0.6-9" And when I want to remvoe SAMBA 2.0.6, it gives me another error message: "The following dependency problem occurred Samba-client-2.0.6-9 requires Samba-common=2.06" So I cannot install the latest samba and I can not remove my older version of samba 2.0.6. It won't let me remove my older samba 2.0.6. Could you help me to uninstall SAMBA 2.0.6 and upgrade to the newer version of SAMBA 2.0.7 ? Thank you very much. See: http://download.sourceforge.net/pub/mirrors/redhat/redhat/updates/6.2/i386/ or another mirror. Download the 3 samba files and do an rpm -Uvh *.rpm If you really insist on using the one you've already downloaded, you probably need to rpm -e the 3 samba files that are already installed (all on one line) and then rpm -Uvh the new one. In either case, make a copy of your current /etc/smb.conf beforehand just to be safe. HTH, Dave
I think this question should be directed to Red Hat Tech Support. The problem lies with the RPM system, not with Samba itself, and REd Hat will have to help you. Hi John, Thanks for the information, but I don't think my problem is the same. All users have been defined with smbpasswd, and the user that is unable to 'login' can be different each time. It depends who logs in second or third, not who the user is. I was having a similar problem here with just 2 Win 98 machines + Samba linux server. I could see the Samba share from one machine, but not the other. I was getting identical error messages in the log.smb file. Turns out the problem was that I had accidently deleted one of the users from the smbpasswd file. (I think IPC has to do with passwords, not sure though). I was also having some kind of problem with the guest account. Setting the guest user to 'nobody' seemed to do the trick. Hope this is helpful. -John Federico rico@columbus.rr.com -------------- next part -------------- HTML attachment scrubbed and removed
David, I want to find out about SAMBA 2.0.7 little more. Does it supports Solaris 8 as server and window 2000 as client. Please let me know. Thanks, Vijay
I tried to install SAMBA version 2.0.7 on a Sun workstation running Solaris 7. When I ran the ./configure, I received the following error message: configure:610: checking for gcc configure:723: checking whether the C compiler (gcc -o) works configure:739: gcc -o conftest -o conftest.c 1>&5 gcc: installation problem, cannot exec 'cpp':No such file or directory configure: failed program was: #line 734 "configure" #include "confdefs.h" My gcc is located in a directory /export/local/bin/gcc. Not sure if the is anymore information that I can provide. If you can help, point me in the write direction I would really appreciate it. main() {return(0);} Steve Schaper WIM Project Office (407) 737-8085
Hello I've been helping a friend to plug a Win95 machine into a Samba server that I've built for him. He's also got a Win 98 machine but we'll leave that out of it just now. I've finished it and it works fine. SuSE 7.1. Using Komba2 in KDE 2.1.1 I can see the whole network through the Linux box. All I have to do is click on the right machine in the Komba2 window and it does an SMB mount straight away. However, when I try to mount the files on the Linux box from the Win 95 machine with Network Neighborhood I find that an error message pops up which says that the Linux server cannot be found. But, we can see the machine on the network in Network Neighborhood. Spoke to Jeremy Allison about this and he said that he thought that it was something to do with the IPX protocol being enabled over the network. I've removed that and I still can't get the Win 95 box to connect to the Linux box. He also said to try Samba 2.2 but that doesn't work either. I've used all of Andrews tests which can be viewed at....... http://www.sheflug.co.uk/networks.htm and I've found not much that makes any sense. All I can say is that it looks as though the Linux box is working fine. 'testparm smb.conf' reveals that all is well. 'smbclient -L BIGSERVER' reveals that there is an "error connecting to BIGSERVER". Don't know why. nmbdlookup -d 2 '*" reveals that all is well. 'smbclient '\\BIGSERVER\TMP' " shows that the connection is refused. After trying to put "net view \\BIGSERVER" into a DOS window on the Win 4.00.950 C system an error message came back which said... " Error 53: The computer name specified in the network path cannot be located." Also tried "net use x: \\BIGSERVER\TMP". It says "net: command not found". Anyone suggest what I'm doing wrong here ? Network cards are fine. Tried everything that I can think of. Thanks -- Richard http://www.sheflug.co.uk
Hi Richard, In your case, the best thing would be to set your log level = 10 and specify your log file = /whateverdirectoryyourlogfileslivein/log.%m Then try to connect via the win95 box, and take a look at the resulting log.<win95machinename> that gets generated. Usually you can grep on 'error' or 'fail' and narrow down where the connection is failing and get some clue. If you can't, send me the smb.conf file and the log file and I'll take a brief look at it to see if I can spot anything. In addition include the ip address of the server and the client involved. Hope this helps, Don "Reason, not volume, is the primary differentiator between a discussion, and an argument." -----Original Message----- From: Richard Ibbotson [mailto:richard@sheflug.co.uk] Sent: Tuesday, May 08, 2001 3:44 PM To: samba@lists.samba.org Subject: Samba 2.0.7 Hello I've been helping a friend to plug a Win95 machine into a Samba server that I've built for him. I have just installed Samba 2.0.7 on a New IBM Netfinity computer system running SCO Open Server 5. I am having problems with mapped drives. I can map network drives, but on some clients (pc's) I am losing the mapping. I try to copy lets say a 10 mb file from the UNIX machine to my local pc through either Windows Explorer or using FTP with the same results which are the following: Windows says it will take 14 minutes to copy these files (Explorer) and after 2 minutes or so I will get a error "Network device no longer available". The client here is a Windows ME machine. If I use FTP the same transfer will take 15 minuites. On other clients ME or 98 the same transfer as above will take 10 seconds or so. This is on the same network. The above needless to say is preventing me from running applications that use mapped drives. This network is small with 15 pc's and 20 serial (dumb terminals) devices. Thanks for the help. Bruce Garcia
