Server writes...?
I have a quick question about rsync's writing of files.
I have a team of people that all use the host BigServer, which is
running rsync as a deamon, as a central place to keep all shared files
backed up. The "master copy" for any given file is considered to be the
local file that somebody has worked on -- i.e., BigServer is NOT
considered the master copy. BigServer is the backup copy. Team mem...

net view \\BIGSERVER problems
...share my linux printer with my windows laptop.
The printer is attached to box with redhat 7.2 and samba-2.2.1a-4.
The laptop runs windows 98 and they are connected by a netgear RP114

I have been following DIAGNOSIS.txt. I had trouble with the test 2,
"ping
ACLIENT" and "ping BIGSERVER" until I added ACLIENT to /etc/hosts on
BIGSERVER and added BIGSERVER to \windows\hosts on ACLIENT.
Tests 3-6 were fine but I had to run smbpasswd -a <accountname> to get
through test 7.
I'm stuck on test 8, "net view \\BIGSERVER". When I try I get:

General speed question
We have some speed/performance issues:
We have a 100M fullduplex private network setup to handle rsync transfers
to our "mirror" server with a command like:
time rsync -e ssh -avzl --delete --rsync-path=/usr/local/bin/rsync \
--exclude ".netscape/cache/" --delete-excluded \
bigserver:/staff1 /mirror/bigserver
It takes about 20 minutes to check/transfer files from
bigserver:/staff1 (Solaris 8) and the local machine (RH 7.2,
Linux 2.4.2-2). bigserver/staff1 is 24G.
Is that speed fast or slow? I think it's slow for a 100M fullduplex
private network. It goes from a pr...

multiple sessions to same destination
Hi All,
I had a look in archives but no joy.
I just want to know before i deploy - if there is any problem with having
multiple rsync sessions from many source locations all to same destination
server ( all copying to different file systems obviously ) ?? Its jusat that
i see on the destination machine a process rsync -server being called
whenever a client connects.
Thanks !

SAMBA 2.0.7
Dear Samba team:
I just download SAMBA 2.0.7 from
http://samba.gorski.net/samba/ftp/Binary_Packages/redhat/
and I have already installed SAMBA 2.0.6 which come
with my red head linux 6.2 CD. But the 2.0.7 SAMBA is
conflict with SAMBA 2.0.6. and it will not allow me
to install the latest version of SAMBA. It gives me
error messages while I am trying to install samba2.0.7

need help with samba server
...'m trying to setup my samba server on my linux
box, went through the installation and stuff, but ran into a whole world of
problems when testing it out (samba2.2.8). As I'm reading through the
DIAGNOSIS.txt file included in the docs, I got stuck on Test 7. when I run
"smbclient //bigserver/tmp" I get prompted with a password. when I type in
my root password (I'm doing all this in root) I get a message saying
"session setup failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE" . Then I tried with
"smbclient //bigserver/tmp -Ufred" and typed in the password for fred, I

SAMBA digest 1812
Hi samba list members,
Firstly, I've been using Samba for some while now and would to thank the
Samba team for such a brilliant effort. I've got a Samba server running on a
Linux box for a client (around 25-30 users) which has been running nearly
90 days now without any serious hitches at all.
The client is incredibly impressed, over the moon, etc ... so it's
probably time to pay up

the other NT's to a Samba share then backup
There is a NT utility WinAT that does the cron trick for NT although you
can do the at commands at the command prompt
The batch file is on my d: drive the command for at is back.cmd
The commands in back.cmd are as follows:
robocopy \\server1\ \\bigserver\aback /mir
robocopy \\server2\ \\bigserver\bback /mir XD queues
Only trick was to create a backup user for each NT machine
Perhaps the easiest way to check this is to install robocopy.exe from the NT
Workstation / NT Server / Windows 2000 resource kit (if
you don't have it, it really is wor...

nmbd not working under Solaris 2.6/Samba 1.9.17p4

2.6. Our NT servers are no longer able to connect the the file services
offered from that box, or at best, only intermittently. I began going
through the "Diagnosing Samba" document (the one on the web page). When I
got to step 4, "nmblookup -B BIGSERVER __SAMBA__" (and yes, I subtituted
the actual name of the Solaris server for BIGSERVER <grin>), I received the
message "name_query failed to find name __SAMBA__" as the last message in
the response.
I'm going to download the latest version of SAMBA and install it to see...

Password Error
I'm new to Samba software. I just installed Samba on my Sun Sparcstation 20 running Solaris 2.5. I
read the DIAGNOSIS.txt file, but in this case, it didn't helped me. When I tried to login in from the
PC to the unix machine by typing "net use x: \\BIGSERVER\TMP", it prompted me for the password, so I typed
in the unix password (I guess?), but an error message returned - "The account is not authorized to login
from this station." Any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate???
Thanks,

Having trouble getting "join" to work successfully
...hbsrv{root}#
We've tried removing and adding the server name to our PDC...and removing
the secrets & machineSID file from /private directory. When we try to join
again, we get the same msg.
I've been through the whole /docs/DIAGNOSIS.txt and the only test that
fails is #8 (net view \\BIGSERVER) and I'm presuming that's because the
join hasn't worked correctly. Can anyone help me out? I would certainly
appreciate it. Thanks.
