[Wine] Re: Carrara 6 on WINE 0.9.59, Ubuntu Hardy 8.04, Gnome 2.22.1...
I'm new to Linux and Wine. I installed Ubuntu 10.4 on a logical partition and tried accessing some of my Windows 3D modelling/machinima programmes in Wine. Daz Studio and Bryce 7 installed perfectly but then didn't run. Moviestorm looks like it would run but needs to connect to the website each time to log in and cannot connect in Wine. Carrara 7.2 not only installed but also runs! So far it will do everything except render. The render tab has nothing there. Blank. However, I can load projects and content, export to various formats, save the project etc. etc. I wondering how the hell I'm going to make it render a video or even a bitmap. Other 3D RELATED programmes which have worked for me in Wine: Sketchup 6 3DSFMM2 Avimator (but it does a weird, scary thing where the screen goes black and I have to press control-alt-delete to bring the screen back to normal) qavimator Makehuman 0.9.1 RC1 Makehuman 1.0 Alpha 5 OpenFX PovRay PoseRay Deep Paint m3d10.exe PlantStudio 2.10 Terrabrush Debugmode Wax (loads 3DS models and manipulates video in 3D space) Vue7 Sculptris VisualJockey (can use 3D shapes in video composition)

[Wine] Carrara 6 on WINE 0.9.59, Ubuntu Hardy 8.04, Gnome 2.22.1...

If you tried to run them without installing, this may work for simple programs, like Notepad, but will not work for programs that write information into the registry. Those programs will need to be installed in Wine. Also, the Applications Database has many applications listed in it. Please consult it for your programs and see if there is workarounds and how-tos for using them. Thank you.
With Daz Studio and Bryce 7: I installed them both in Wine but then they wouldn't actually run. In the case of Moviestorm I haven't tried re-installing it in Wine yet.
John Drescher wrote:> > If you want help post the terminal output on pastebin.comI'm not particularly looking for help just at the moment. I'm only posting about what progress I've made so far getting 3D programmes to work or not. Here's an update: Carrara 7.2 now works completely, that is to say even the rendering bit of it. I'm not sure what the problem was but it came right after "switching it off and on again" as they say. After the machine was rebooted Carrara works perfectly. As to Bryce 7.2, I copy/pasted a couple of dlls (dzwrapper.dll and msvcp60.dll) into the Bryce folder and Bryce was then able to start - but crashed because of a memory read/write problem. Error message about trying to write to memory address "unknown" or something. I'll post more news when there is any. I've just obtained a whole new suite of 3D software from Autodesk, including 3DS Max and Maya. After I get these installed in Windows I'll have a go at getting them to run in Wine too.
speculativism Little bit of advice go through the applications you are trying to run in wine. I know the both makehuman have native Linux forms and prebuild binary for Ubuntu. Better performance is normally achievable that path. Also particular information we want always. What version wine you used that can be found out by doing wine --verison in terminal. And what messages applications are putting out when run from terminal.
