[Wine] Re: Carrara 6 on WINE 0.9.59, Ubuntu Hardy 8.04, Gnome 2.22.1...
Hi VitalBodies, I have just made the switch to Ubuntu myself, Whilst I understand I may never get Carrara to work, I have successfully installed Corel Bryce 5, Hexagon and Daz Studio 3 advanced under wine 1.2. The Wine App Database says that folks have got Eovia Carrara 5 to work with no problem but after installing this version along with the C++ runtime's, Carrara 5 under Wine will not let me render - I get "An unknown error has occurred". So near yet so far!

You might find out what it's requirements are. Like does it need activeX, .net or who knows what?

Hello again. Daz Studio 3 just works, so does Hexagon and Bryce 5. As for Carrara, I have tried Active X but not as yet .net (I think Carrara 5 pre-dates .net). I will give you an update if Imake any more progress - its most fustrating as it has been reported to work in older versions of wine and Ubuntu. I will turn off multi threading in the render engine next and see if that works.

I am using an 8 core (two quad core xeons) computer with 18GB ram. You would would think that would be more than enough power to run email. Yet Evolution will bog down the whole computer as it bogs down the hard drive. It is some odd bug. On a single quad core with 4GB of ram I have no issues. Thus, if you are using a very powerful computer you might also try a less powerful one and see it that helps. So are you fully functional other than rendering? Like can you model and such for lenths of time to make sure the program is steady? I will throw out some ideas: Do you have to allocate memory and is there enough? If the renderer has to write a file does it have permissions and did you create the folder or check that it exists? Are you using Ubuntu 32-bit or 64 bit and is it worth testing in both? Long shot: could it be video driver related. Are you using Ubuntu or Ubuntu Studio? My suggestions are only an attempt to be helpful and not based on any recent experiance trying to run Carrara. Also In System > Administration > Log File Viewer you might find hints possibly.

I got it to work! It was going through preferences that did it, I think it was changing the scratch disk location that solved it. YAHOO! To answer your question, I am on Ubuntu Studio 32bit I am very happy - my advice is to pursue getting V5 to work before attempting later versions .

Wow, Exciting! You might want to post what your settings are and where you moved the scratch disk to for those that follow...

Fair enough, here are some of the preferences I have changed, like I said I was not terribly methodical about it so I am not 100% sure what I changed that made the difference but I know it works now so this is a good starting point for anybody trying to achieve the same thing. Can I put this break through on my blog? I can let Linux users know it works. I would need to use your screen captures though.
